Before signing off for the night after the conclusion of her second-time hosting stint at the Golden Globes, comedian Nikki Glaser paid a subtle homage to the late Rob Reiner with a costume change referencing his indelible mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap.
Glaser returned to the stage in a black and silver sequined gown and a baseball cap emblazoned with the words “Spinal Tap” in the comedy movie’s signature font. As she bid A-List directors, actors and writers good night, she quoted some of the 1984 pic’s most memorable lines.
“This one went to 11. Thank you guys for an amazing night, and I hope we found the line between clever and stupid. A good Chalamet to you all,” she said.
The comic previewed to USA Today several days ago how she would handle a tribute to the iconic director, given that the Globes do not have a dedicated in memoriam segment.
“I have something planned that I’m going to do in my own way to just acknowledge [Reiner] and celebrate him in my own way,” she said. “I knew him, but not that well. I’m not going to linger on it too much because I think that’s what we’ve been doing for the past few weeks. But obviously, I thought if something happened to me and Rob Reiner was hosting a show, given our relationship, how would I want him to handle it? I think I landed on something that I feel he would do for me, too.”
Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood home Dec. 14 from multiple stab wounds. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to their killings.
