The sequel to the Oscar-winning monster masterpiece Godzilla Minus One has been in development for nearly three years, but we still have virtually no significant information about how Godzilla will return to torment (or perhaps protect) Japan. We finally have a release date for the sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, and the announcement of that date was accompanied by a brand-new official poster for the movie.
Despite a release date that's less than 11 months away, the new poster maintains the relative secrecy surrounding the sequel's plot. However, eagle-eyed Goji fans have already begun to speculate about hidden meanings or clues in the poster. One theory in particular aligns with what many Godzilla-heads have believed would be the first villain placed in the path of the colloquially-recognized MinusGoji, based on commentary from the movie's writer/director/VFX lead, Takashi Yamazaki.
The New Godzilla Minus Zero Poster May Point To Hedorah, The Smog Monster
At a panel at Comic-Con in 2024, Takashi Yamazaki expressed interest in adapting a story that involved Hedorah, the alien kaiju whose ultra-toxic powers are a result of feeding on the Earth's pollution. Yamazaki specifically spoke about how modern VFX techniques could be used to great effect with Hedorah, specifically with regard to how he moves.
Fast-forward to January 2026, and the first official poster provides a clear-as-day hint about Hedorah's involvement in the sequel—but only if you choose to see it that way. At first glance, the poster appears to show a view from above cloud cover, with Godzilla's bluish atomic glow piercing the clouds on one side and the bright sunshine cutting through on the other.
However, the "clouds" could most certainly be the smog that Hedorah produces, and for which he was named. The brownish, almost tendril-like spread of the clouds could be a blanket of poisonous fumes spreading across Japan. That would certainly be one way to bring the human characters low once again after they successfully defeated Godzilla in Minus One.
It's easy to talk oneself in or out of seeing Hedorah's toxic smog instead of clouds, but knowing that Yamazaki has specifically cited adapting Hedorah, it seems like an awfully suspicious coincidence. Hedorah famously killed hundreds during his first appearance as he covered Japan in poison, and that would allow Yamazaki to retain the gut-wrenching human drama that was the heart of Minus One.
Hedorah Isn't The Only Monster The Poster Could Be Teasing
Yamazaki's poster acts rather brilliantly as a Rorschach test for Godzilla fans, as it's perfectly possible to find hints for several different potential foes for Godzilla. For example, what appears to be the sun could just as easily be the bright, warming glow of Mothra borrowed from the Legendary Monsterverse. That would allow the terrifying version of Godzilla from Minus One to remain the villain in the sequel.
Elsewhere, the yellow coloring along with the three tendrils of the main cloud mass in the center of the poster could hint at King Ghidorah, Godzilla's archnemesis who fires bright yellow "gravity" beams from each of its three heads. We've already seen Yamazaki's interpretation of King Ghidorah fighting MinusGoji, but in a simulator theme park ride in Japan that Yamazaki did the VFX work for.
Regardless of which monster ends up in Godzilla Minus Zero alongside the King of Monsters, the announcement of a release date this year and the new poster have reignited the hype machine. With Yamazaki in charge of every element of the production, the vision should be crystal clear for a gripping sequel.
