Out of all the streaming giants, Netflix probably has the biggest reign when it comes to sci-fi shows. From Stranger Things to Sense8, the platform has become the go-to for well-done, thought-provoking and even twisted sci-fi series. But while some of these shows have become major cultural phenomena, others, like the 2018 reboot series Lost in Space, have remained under the radar, but still accumulated a fair share of views. According to FlixPatrol, the series, which is based on the classic 1965 sci-fi TV show of the same name, earned over 44.3 million hours in the first six months of 2025, totaling 5.6 million views. The viewership numbers are impressive, and it goes to show that Lost in Space shouldn't be underseen for long.

What Is 'Lost in Space' About?

Set in the near future of 2046, Lost in Space follows the Robinson family – comprised of parents John (Toby Stephens) and Maureen (Molly Parker), and their children Judy (Taylor Russell), Penny (Mina Sundwall), and Will (Maxwell Jenkins) – as they embark on a mission to start a new space colony in the planet Alpha Centauri. During their flight, however, the Robinsons' spaceship is abruptly thrown off course, and they end up in an unknown alien world. Now light-years from their original destination, the family must work together to face a dangerous environment filled with alien threats, extreme weather, and limited resources.

Alongside the Robinsons, also stranded on the new planet are Don West (Ignacio Serricchio), a smuggler posing as a mechanic, and Parker Posey's June Harris, a manipulative con artist who initially assumes another person’s identity. Despite the circumstances, the two continue to deceive everyone around them, with Harris becoming one of the show's biggest antagonists. Lastly, another important character in the story is the powerful alien Robot (Brian Steele), a powerful robot who develops an endearing connection to the Robinsons' youngest kid, Will.

'Lost in Space' Only Got Better With Time

Lost in Space, which was created by Irwin Allen, is not only a gripping three-season Netflix production, but is a show that, despite the odds, improved over time. According to the series' Rotten Tomatoes scores, Lost in Space average over the years was 84%, with Season 1 scoring 67%, Season 2 85%, and Season 3 knocking it out of the park with 100%. After all, while Season 1 was criticized for lacking direction and uniqueness, Season 3 reached the soft spot with fans and critics alike. The third season was praised for its acting, the show's ability to bring heart with the Robinsons' connection, and for its conclusion, which, for one reviewer, felt like a "warm farewell."

With that said, whether or not you've seen the original Lost in Space series, or the Lost in Space feature film from 1998, the 2018 rendition of the story is well worth watching. With a family's relationship at its heart, the sci-fi series turns up the heat in clashes with alien creatures, foreign threats and even deceitful fellow travelers. It's a show that has everything, and certainly continues to establish Netflix as a go-to place for the sci-fi genre. Lost in Space might've come to an end in 2021, but millions of viewers are still tuning in to watch.
