Less than a year ago, Netflix released a great detective thriller, which showed incredible promise and proved to be the perfect series for Agatha Christie fans. Surprisingly, after only one season, Netflix canceled the show.
While it is unfortunate that the show's season 2 did not see the light of day, its first installment still tells a compelling, well-rounded story. Owing to this, fans of comedy thrillers and gripping mystery dramas should definitely check out the Netflix series, especially if they love Agatha Christie's books.
Netflix’s The Residence Is The Perfect Show For Agatha Christie Fans
Produced by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland and created by Paul William Davies, Netfix's The Residence often feels like an Agatha Christie novel because of how it presents a perfect "closed circle" mystery. With Uzo Aduba as its central detective character, Cordelia Cupp, the show begins like a typical whodunit, where a murder at the White House leads to all doors getting locked and every guest and resident becoming a suspect.
Similar to Poirot, Detective Cupp is portrayed as an eccentric sleuth who cares less about forensic evidence and relies heavily on her hyper-observation abilities. Like Poirot shows a strange obsession with his mustache, and Miss Marple loves to knit, Cupp is also portrayed as a keen bird watcher.
The show also explicitly pays tribute to popular works of detective fiction by borrowing their names for its episode titles. Viewers will also notice how, like Agatha Christie's books, The Residence subtly dabbles with themes surrounding class divides by creating clear spatial differences between the kinds of residents and guests at the White House.
The Residence Also Directly Connects 1 Major Detective Franchise
The Residence also features some intriguing meta references, where Cupp claims that she isn't in "some Knives Out situations." The reference is not only hilarious because even the Knives Out movies are on Netflix but also because the show feels very similar to the murder mystery films.
Cupp's references also often suggest the show unfolds in the same universe as Knives Out and that Benoit Blanc, too, is a real detective in its world. This could have been the perfect setup for a detective crossover. Unfortunately, Netflix canceled The Residence too soon.
Netflix Canceled The Residence Too Soon
The Residence had all the right ingredients to become a prestige detective drama, with each season of the show dabbling in a new set of murder mysteries. But, as fate would have it, the show became another victim to Netflix's unfair measure of short-term metrics, which led to its cancellation after season 1.
While it is sad that we will never get another season of The Residence on Netflix, viewers can always watch its well-rounded season 1 without worrying about cliffhangers or unresolved storylines.
