Netflix has confirmed that it is moving forward with two more Emily Henry adaptations ahead of the release of People We Meet on Vacation. People We Meet on Vacation stars Emily Bader and Tom Blyth as Poppy and Alex, and follows their slow-burning, friends-to-lovers journey as they reconnect after years apart during an annual vacation tradition. The film is directed by Brett Haley and co-written by Yulin Kuang, Amos Vernon, and Nunzio Randazzo.
As reported by Variety, Netflix has acquired the rights for the movie adaptation of Henry's novel, Funny Story, and will transition its already in-development adaptation of Happy Place from a TV series to a film. Happy Place is being produced by Nuyorican’s Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina.
Funny Story is being produced by Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company (RPC), with Henry writing the script. The film currently does not have a director attached. Neither Happy Place nor Funny Story has set its cast yet.
People We Meet on Vacation is Henry’s first adaptation to hit Netflix and represents a major milestone for the genre in mainstream streaming. Based on Henry’s 2021 hit novel of the same name, the film will follow Poppy and Alex, best friends for a decade, who, despite living in different cities, spend every summer together and gradually begin to question their relationship.
Check the trailer out below:
In the book, Alex and Poppy share a drunken kiss in Croatia, which causes them to stop talking for two years, and they are now trying to reconnect in Palm Springs. With Bader and Blyth leading, the People We Meet on Vacation cast also features Sarah Catherine Hook, Lucien Laviscount, Miles Heizer, Jameela Jamil, Tommy Do, Lukas Gage, Alice Lee, Molly Shannon, and Alan Ruck.
Happy Place follows exes Harriet and Wyn as they pretend to still be together during one last summer trip with friends at a Maine beach house, while Funny Story centers on Daphne, a children’s librarian navigating heartbreak after her fiancé leaves her for his childhood best friend, all while forming an unlikely bond with her ex’s former partner, Miles, in a plan that complicates feelings, friendships, and romance.
In addition to Happy Place and Funny Story, several other novels by Henry have secured adaptation deals with major studios. Beach Read (2020) and Book Lovers (2022) are both set to be adapted into films, with creative teams already in place and production efforts underway, although neither has an official release date yet.
Henry's latest novel, Great Big Beautiful Life, published in April, has not yet been assigned to a screen project but is widely considered a strong candidate for a future adaptation.
As People We Meet on Vacation prepares to touch down on Netflix, the Emily Henry cinematic universe is already taking shape. With Happy Place and Funny Story next in line for Netflix, and more adaptations to come from other studios, it seems that Henry’s heartfelt romantic worlds will be one of the defining adaptation efforts of 2026 and beyond.
People We Meet on Vacation premieres on Netflix on January 9.
