Game of Thrones concluded with a controversial series finale in 2019, leaving a mystery about one of the swords crafted from Lord Eddard Stark's (Sean Bean) sword, Ice. Ned Stark was shockingly beheaded in Game of Thrones season 1, and the fate of Ice was not revealed until season 4.

Game of Thrones season 4's premiere, "Two Swords," began with Ice being melted down under the orders of Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance). Twyin had the Starks' hereditary weapon reforged into two new Valyrian steel swords intended for his son, Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), and grandson, King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson).

Joffrey named his Valyrian steel gift Widow's Wail, but the sadistic boy king didn't wield it long, as he was immediately murdered by poison. Jaime gave his sword to Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), who named it Oathkeeper. As Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, the one-handed Ser Jaime then took possession of Widow's Wail as his weapon.

What Happened To Widow’s Wail Is Still A Game Of Thrones Mystery 7 Years Later

Jaime Lannister Widow's Wail

The fate of Widow's Wail remains unknown following Game of Thrones' series finale. In Game of Thrones season 8, Jaime Lannister brought Widow's Wail with him to Winterfell and used it to fight the White Walkers' invasion. Jaime then fled Winterfell for King's Landing to be with his twin sister and lover, Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

Ser Jaime didn't make it to King's Landing before he was captured and detained by the Unsullied, who confiscated Widow's Wail. In Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5, "The Bells," Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) freed his older brother before Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and her dragon, Drogon, burned King's Landing to the ground.

Jaime never recovered Widow's Wail from the Unsullied.

Jaime never recovered Widow's Wail from the Unsullied. He entered King's Landing unarmed and took a dead man's sword, which he used to fight and kill Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk). After Jaime reunited with Cersei, the Lannister twins were killed beneath King's Landing when they were buried under rubble as the castle collapsed from Daenerys' dragonfire.

What happened to Widow's Wail? It's possible the Unsullied kept possession of the Valyrian steel weapon. After Jon Snow (Kit Harington) murdered Daenerys, Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) led the Unsullied to the Isle of Naath, leaving Westeros behind, and the eunuch army could have sailed away with Widow's Wail.

Otherwise, Widow's Wail is simply missing. However, George R.R. Martin has hinted at possible Game of Thrones sequels in development at HBO, and perhaps one of them could shed light on the whereabouts of Widow's Wail.

Brienne’s Oathkeeper Is A Sad Reminder Of Jaime Lannister

Brienne and Oathkeeper Game of Thrones

Oathkeeper remains the primary weapon of Brienne of Tarth, who replaced Jaime Lannister as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard at the end of Game of Thrones. In Game of Thrones season 8, episode 2, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," Jaime used Widow's Wail to raise Brienne to become a knight.

Jaime and Brienne acted on their mutual feelings they developed throughout Game of Thrones, and they became lovers, but their happiness wouldn't last long. Jaime reverted to his eternal devotion to Cersei and abandoned Brienne to reunite with his sweet sister.

Every aspect of being the new Lord Commander is a sad reminder of Jaime for Brienne, including Oathkeeper. Yet no one who survived Game of Thrones' ending is concerned with Widow's Wail, and it's likely that none of the Starks even know that Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth's swords came from Ned Stark's Ice.
