Several riders were injured during the Tour Down Under cycling event over the weekend after a pair of kangaroos attempted to cross the road during the busy sporting event.
According to a report by 7News, the incident occurred during the race on Sunday, January 25. Multiple riders were injured as two kangaroos bounced through the crowd of cyclists, knocking them onto the ground. Jay Vine, an Australian competitor, was affected by the incident but went on to win the event. Mikkel Bjerg, Vine's Danish teammate, was forced to retire from the race after the crash.
7News shared footage of the kangaroos disrupting the race on X. The commentators were clearly stunned by the interruption, with Phil Liggett exclaiming, "Oh! It's a kangaroo! I've never seen that before." Another commentator, Matthew Keenan, added, "Unfortunately, one of the hazards of racing in Australia in these regions is some of the wildlife. You can't tell them don't go about your day, there's a bike race on."
Speaking about the crash, Liggett noted that Vine "went down heavily," and his teammate looked to be in "extreme discomfort." The 7News video also shows a wide shot of the crash from above. One of the kangaroos is clearly distressed as it tries to escape the road. A commentator says, "Oh, dear. That's tragic. He also took a knock himself, the kangaroo." 7News reveals that authorities euthanized at least one animal owing to its injuries.
Vine explained, "Everyone asks me what's the most dangerous thing in Australia, and I always tell them it's kangaroos." He told the outlet that they hide in the bushes until you can't stop. "Two of them blasted through the peloton as we were doing probably 50 KPH," he added.
CBS Sports reports that Vine won the race with a 1:03 lead over Mauro Schmid in second despite the crash. He reportedly lost one teammate in the kangaroo crash and two others during the rest of the tour. The kangaroos knocked three other riders out of the race: Menno Huising, Lucas Stevenson, and Alberto Dainese.
