MS NOW and CNN aired a video, widely circulating on social media, of the shooting of a woman in Minneapolis by an Immigration And Customs Enforcement agent, as the mayor of the city said that he does not believe the Trump administration’s claim that the officer was acting in self-defense.
The video shows agents confronting the driver of a maroon colored Honda Pilot. As the driver pulls away, an agent on the left driver’s side of the vehicle fires into it. The vehicle then increased speed before smashing into parked cars nearby.
After it aired, MS NOW anchor Katy Tur told viewers, “The Secretary of Homeland Security just called it an act of domestic terrorism. She claims the woman was trying to run over ICE agents, and that ICE officers who were hurt are expected to make full recoveries. We haven’t seen every angle of the video, but the one that we just showed you does not appear to show any agents being injured there.”
On CNN, Brianna Keilar initially told viewers that “we, at this point, are going through a number of videos to make sure that what we bring you has been verified.” But the network later showed the video, with a warning that it contained graphic content.
“The context is very important,” said anchor Boris Sanchez. “We don’t know exactly what happened before this footage was captured, so keep that in mind as you watch this.”
On Fox News, anchor John Roberts said that they were awaiting clearance to show the video “and have eyes that are more expert than mine.” “Clearly, there are very. very conflicting opinions of what happened.”
The victim was identified as a 37-year-old woman, a U.S. citizen, who was not the target of the immigration crackdown.
In a statement, Tricia McLaughlin, spokesperson for DHS, said that “ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism.”
“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that the agents, as they were taking part in an enforcement action, “because of the adverse weather that is in Minneapolis. They were attempting to push out their vehicle and a woman attacked them, and those surrounding them, and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.”
Fox News’ Roberts told viewers that he had watched the video, but that “what I saw of it does counteract the narrative that they were trying to push their car out of the snow.”
In a press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that “they are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bullshit. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.” Frey also told ICE to the get “f— out of Minneapolis.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that the incident is still under investigation as to what happened. He and Frey called for peace in the city, as protesters gathered at the location of the incident in south Minneapolis.
