The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer is now out, and it brings back a surprising Marvel Cinematic Universe villain. It is no secret that the MCU has had a turbulent time during the Multiverse Saga. With the franchise's expansion on Disney+, it took some time until the MCU's TV shows found their footing, and in theaters, box office returns have diminished.
In the MCU's Multiverse Saga, several characters were introduced, only for them to disappear for years on end. Sadly, many of those might never return in future MCU movies, as I suspect is the case for Harry Styles' Eros and others. Thankfully, Avengers: Doomsday's cast is bringing back many Multiverse Saga characters, and one of those is a surprising villain.
Avengers: Doomsday's Latest Trailer Confirms A Returning Villain Rumor
When the cast of the next Avengers movie was revealed, the announcement that Tenoch Huerta's Namor would be returning in the MCU took many by surprise. After all, Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, several multiverse characters, and MCU heroes were already expected for the film, so having another antagonist — now an ally of Wakanda — thrown into the mix was interesting.
Speculation began about what kind of role Namor could have in the movie, and that has now been teased with the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer focused on Wakanda and the Fantastic Four, which confirmed that Mabel Cardena will be back as Namora alongside Namor, marking a surprising Phase 4 villain return. Given her small role in the MCU, Namora was not expected in the film.
However, I guess her coming back makes sense. Marvel's new Avengers: Doomsday trailer shows Namor, who wears his comics-accurate blue suit, sitting on his throne as he, Namora, and the other citizens of Talokan seem to look in disbelief at what appears to be their home completely devoid of water. This sets up an interesting arc for the characters.
What Role Could Namora Play In Avengers: Doomsday?
Even though Namora is back in the MCU movie, she is unlikely to play a big role in Avengers: Doomsday. With characters like Steve Rogers, Thor, Loki, Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, Fox's X-Men, and many other high-profile players, there just isn't enough space to allow Namora to shine. Still, the returning MCU villain could be part of a dark storyline.
In the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, Shuri talks about how a king's duty is to prepare their people for the afterlife, as we see Namor, Namora, and the citizens of Talokan in what appears to be their home, but now as a desert. An Incursion could be seriously damaging the MCU's main Earth, with Namor and his people suffering the consequences in an emotional plot in Avengers: Doomsday.
