Marvel Already Forgot One Of The Best Weapons To Beat Doctor Doom In Avengers: Doomsday

A weapon that would have been invaluable to any battle with Doctor Doom exists in the MCU, but don't expect to see it in Avengers: Doomsday. Given that Doom is the villain of a story that will encompass not only Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but also the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts, there's no doubt we'll be seeing an extremely powerful iteration of the Latverian dictator.

With that in mind, the main characters the movie are likely to adopt an all-hands-on-deck approach to defeating Doctor Doom, meaning they'll use everything at their disposal to stop him from accomplishing whatever his ultimate goal may be. Over the years, the MCU has introduced all manner of weapons and concepts that can be employed against Doom, from Stormbreaker to Namor's army of Talokanil warriors.

However, some of the best possible tools they could potentially use against him may not be even in play. To change that, Marvel would have to revisit a corner of the MCU it had seemingly abandoned six years ago.

The Ebony Blade Would Be A Great Weapon To Use Against Doctor Doom

Ebony Blade wrapped up in Eternals

A post-credits scene in Eternals saw Kit Harrington's Dane Whitman come into the possession of a black-bladed sword known in Marvel Comics as the Ebony Blade, the signature weapon of the character's comic counterpart. Due to a curse placed upon it, using the Ebony Blade comes with huge drawbacks, and yet it remains a highly coveted weapon, which says a lot about what it brings to the table.

As a sword created through magical means, the Ebony Blade can cut through almost anything. For that reason, it's been the subject of concern or interest from several Marvel characters, including Knull, Malekith the Accursed and Dracula.

It also has properties that could make it relevant to any plan that involves time or multiversal travel. In classic Avengers comics, Black Knight used a mystical ritual to pursue the sword through time.

One of the reasons Doom is so difficult to bring down is his magically-warded armor, but theoretically, the Ebony Blade should be able to neutralize those protections and pierce through his armor and any force fields he may erect against the Avengers.

The Ebony Blade Is Available, But Unlikely To Appear In Avengers: Doomsday

Now that the MCU's take on the Ebony Blade is in the hands of Dane Whitman, it's technically available for use in Avengers: Doomsday if the character were to suit up as the Black Knight. Dane becoming the Black Knight and joining the Avengers - just as he did in the comics - once made a lot of sense, but considered how Marvel Studios has walked away from the characters introduced in Eternals after its failure in 2020, such a scenario is hard to fathom.

It's unfortunate, given that Black Knight and the Ebony Blade share a rich, storied history in Marvel Comics that the MCU could use to make him a truly reliable player in high-stakes battles like the one Doom is sure to provide in Avengers: Doomsday.

It's not impossible, though, that the MCU could later change course, bring back Kit Harrington's character, and simply redirect his narrative away from the Eternals. Kit Harrington's comments about Black Knight's future indicate that's not on the horizon anytime soon, but it could be an idea Marvel will explore later, sometime after Avengers: Doomsday.
