Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill has opened up on what major criticism he has with the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Although The Force Awakens came out 32 years after Return of the Jedi, Lucasfilm brought back major figures from the original trilogy like Luke Skywalker (Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and even Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). However, while the trio spends much of the original trilogy together, they never reunite as a whole in any of the three movies. Hamill is as upset about this as we are, and he’s finally spoken out about why it never happened.
During a recent roundtable conversation hosted by The Hollywood Reporter that featured other actors like Dwayne Johnson and Jacob Elordi, the stars were posed a question about someone they wish they had shared the screen with. Without hesitation, Hamill spoke up and said, “Harrison Ford.” The duo never reunited in any of the sequel trilogy movies, though Fisher shared scenes with both Hamill and Ford separately. He continued, “I said, ‘Aren’t we going to have a moment where all three of us get together to raise the roof? It’ll only take thirty seconds,” but director J.J. Abrams had other plans.
Hamill says Abrams looked at him and said, “Well, Mark, it’s not Luke’s story anymore.” This may be true, but it’s Luke’s story that got millions of people around the world obsessed with Star Wars in the first place, along with Han Solo’s story and Leia’s story. The sequel trilogy was right to focus on a new generation of characters, but it still would have been nice to see the original trio reunited on the big screen one final time before fans said goodbye forever.
Each Sequel Trilogy Movie Killed One Star Wars Icon
None of the Star Wars icons in question survived the events of the sequel trilogy, which killed off one of them in each film. Han Solo was the first to go in The Force Awakens during a battle with his son, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), but he did return in a vision in The Rise of Skywalker. Luke perishes at the end of The Last Jedi while Force-projecting himself into a battle with Kylo Ren and making room for the Resistance to escape. Finally, Leia dies in The Rise of Skywalker using the Force to reach her son, Kylo Ren, when he finally completes his turn to the light side and returns to his original identity, Ben Solo.
