Leonardo DiCaprio brings his doting mother Irmelin Indenbirken, 82, as his red carpet date to the annual Golden Globe Awards

He's acquired something of a reputation as one of Hollywood's most eligible bachelors, but Leonardo DiCaprio only had eyes for one woman during his latest red carpet appearance on Sunday evening.

Indeed, the young models and actresses one typically associates with the Oscar-winning actor were overlooked as DiCaprio attended the Golden Globes alongside his mother, Irmelin Indenbirken.

The Hollywood star was accompanied by Irmelin, 82, as the ceremony got underway at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, but her appearance brought no luck on the night, with DiCaprio going home empty handed after missing out on the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The much fancied DiCaprio, 51, who has won critical acclaim for his starring role in Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, ultimately missed out to Timothée Chalamet and Marty Supreme.

Chalamet has soared over DiCaprio as the betting favorite to win the coveted Best Actor Oscar as he earned the top honor at the Golden Globe Awards 2026 for Marty Supreme (directed by Josh Safdie).

Before Award season it was DiCaprio who was the odds favorite to take home the coveted gong, but now Chalamet is a massive favorite to win the top acting prize at March's Academy Awards according to regulated exchange and prediction market Kalshi.

One Battle After Another was the most awarded film of the night with four but will no doubt face stiff competition in the Oscars race from Hamnet (directed by Chloe Zhao) as it earned the last award of the night in the Best Picture - Drama category over Frankenstein, It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Sinners.

On the television side, it was The Pitt (created by R. Scott Gemmill), The Studio (created by Evan Goldberg, Alex Gregory, and Peter Huyck), and Adolescence (created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne) which earned wins in the drama, comedy or musical, and limited series categories, respectively.

Ermelin raised DiCaprio as a single parent in Los Angeles, and credits the success of his acting career with the enduring love she gave him during his childhood.

He told Access Hollywood in 2014 that her support after he'd announced, at the age of 12, that he wanted to act was unwavering. He said: 'She’s the only reason I’m able to do what I do.'

Irmelin was also fiercely protective over her son in the early years of his fame, often putting herself between him and camera-wielding paparazzi.

After her own traumatic early years - she was born in Germany in an air raid shelter in 1943 as the Second World War raged across Europe, Irmelin was determined her son would have a better upbringing.

In 1998, her mother, Helene Indenbirke, told the German magazine Hellweger Anzeiger, that being born in the tiny village of Oer-Erkenschwick, just north of Dortmund, saw the family endure 'hard times', circumstances that would eventually see them flee to the US, but not until the war had been over for a decade.

Irmelin was raised as a teenager in a German community in New York. Her parents would eventually return to their roots three decades later in 1985.

After training to be a legal secretary, Dicaprio's mother met his father, George, who sold comic books, in her twenties.

The couple reportedly picked their future son's name while on holiday in Florence, after browsing the city's famous masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci.

George and Irmelin would separate before little Leo turned one but, the star has said, they co-parented amicably - with George living next door for a period - although the bond he shares with his mother is clearly remarkably strong.

Although DiCaprio's childhood in a 'rough' East Los Angeles suburb was easier than his mother's war-time experiences, it wasn't gilded by any means.

He said in 1998: 'It was definitely a rough neighborhood, but it was cool. I got to see a lot of stuff. It’s good to grow up like that, I think. It’s good to see that side at a young age'.

Iremlin has her son to thank for success in her romantic life. She's been dating handsome Scot David Ward, who’s thought to be around 72, since her actor son set them up on a blind date nearly 11 years ago.

Ward now travels with Iremlin in luxury around the globe. The couple party with A-listers, holiday with supermodels, travel in private jets and hang out on the set of Hollywood blockbusters as they support DiCaprio's career.

What's more, Ward's nickname is ‘The Dos Equis Man’, in reference to the famous Mexican beer brand’s adverts, which feature Jonathan Goldsmith who's described as living the dream as ‘the most interesting man in the world’.
