21 years after its release, Constantine is now a success with viewers on streaming as the wait for Keanu Reeves' sequel return drags on. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the action horror film remains a Reeves favorite, and calls for his return to the world of the DC Comics character continue.
Following the film's release on HBO Max on January 1, Constantine currently ranks as the fourth most popular movie on the streaming service. That means Reeves now has four movies in total in the streamer's top 10, including John Wick (2014) at number 2, John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) at number 5, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) at number 8.
In addition to trailing behind the original John Wick, Constantine falls short of the Gerard Butler-starring Greenland (2020) in third place. Dominating the top 10 is the critically acclaimed One Battle After Another (2025), which remains a front-runner at this year's Oscars.
With a reported budget of $100 million and a box office haul of $230 million, Constantine, which also stars Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Peter Stormare, wasn't a major hit. Featuring Reeves as demon-hunter John Constantine, the film has remained popular on home-viewing platforms, however, and has become enough of a success to lead to development on a sequel.
Though Constantine 2 development dates back to at least 2011, it wasn't until September 2022 that the film started to feel like a real possibility, with both Reeves and Lawrence reported to be returning. Following these reports, progress on the sequel has seemingly been slow-going, but Reeves revealed to Inverse last February that the story idea for the movie had finally been approved and that writing a script was the next order of business.
DC Studios head James Gunn then provided another update on Constantine 2 in October, telling BobaTalks that he's "discussed it with Keanu" but that he hadn't yet seen a script for the project. There have been no new developments regarding the sequel since, but work on the screenplay, which will be penned by Akiva Goldsman, is presumably ongoing.
It's worth noting that the sequel is still not yet a sure thing. Whether Constantine 2 gets a green light will depend on the script. Assuming the script gets finished and approved this year, it's possible production could start in 2027, but schedules could well push this into the following year. A release date, then, could be set for 2028 or 2029.
While the wait continues for more news regarding the Constantine sequel, it's clear audiences are enjoying revisiting the original. This streaming boost may not hurry things along too greatly, but it does suggest that Reeves' return as John Constantine would be a welcome one.
