Kathy Bates reigns supreme for live TV spontaneity.

The Matlock star was totally game when 2026 Critics Choice Awards host Chelsea Handler made reference to a spicy scene in Marty Supreme involving Timothée Chalamet—who received the award for Best Actor for his role in the sports drama—and a ping pong paddle.

“Someone in this room has a ping pong paddle under their seat,” Chelsea told the audience at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., during the Jan. 4 ceremony airing on E! and USA Network. “Whoever has it gets to spank Timothée at the afterparty tonight.”

Moments later, Kathy, 77, appeared onscreen holding the paddle up to her face and licking it a number of times while staring into the camera. But after committing to the comedic moment, she quickly appeared to second-guess her actions.

“So gross,” she said from her seat. “I can’t believe I did that!”

While Timothée, 30, was not in the crowd to witness the bit, he eventually arrived at the venue more than an hour into the show accompanied by girlfriend Kylie Jenner, who wore a black sequined gown for the occasion. The actor coordinated his look with hers, sporting a navy pinstripe suit. (For more standout fashion from the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, click here.)

And though Timothée and Kylie, 28, opted not to walk the red carpet, their presence was still felt thanks to HacksMegan Stalter and Paul W. Downs, who hilariously recreated the head-to-toe orange ensembles worn by the couple at Marty Supreme’s Los Angeles premiere in December.

“I don't even know what this is,” Megan comically told E! News’ Keltie Knight of her vibrant outfit as she made her way into the event. “My stylist just pulled it.”

Likewise, Paul downplayed the apparent homage, adding, “We don't want to name drop.”
