EXCLUSIVE: Apple Original Films and Platinum Dunes’ psychological thriller Sponsor has added SAG Award-winner Justine Lupe to the pic which stars and was co-written by Jason Segel.
As we previously mentioned, the production which is set to shoot in California is directed and co-written by James Ponsoldt. Segel and Ponsoldt also produce with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Alex Ginno from Platinum Dunes.
Also starring in the thriller is Academy Award-nominee John C. Reilly and Academy and Emmy Award-nominee Amy Madigan.
In Sponsor, Peter (Segel) makes a big mistake when he gets behind the wheel after partying too hard. A terrible accident leaves him with a choice: prison or a recovery program. Convinced he doesn’t have a drinking problem, he begrudgingly shows up to his first meeting and searches for a sponsor. In walks no-nonsense, charismatic yet enigmatic Jerry. Peter is convinced Jerry is the answer to his prayers.
The project reps the latest collaboration for Apple, Segel and Ponsoldt following Emmy Award-nominated comedy Shrinking, which returns for its third season on Jan. 28. Segel and Ponsoldt also previously collaborated on the 2015 feature The End of the Tour, in which Segel starred and Ponsoldt directed.
Lupe is repped by CAA. She starred in HBO’s Succession as Willa Ferreya, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. Lupe was recently nominated at the Critics Choice for Supporting Actress Comedy Series for Nobody Wants This. She’s also a 2x Actors Award winner for Succession in the ensemble TV drama series category.
Of late, Apple Original Films’ has F1, which is their highest grossing movie ever with over $631M at the global box office and counts 2 Golden Globe noms for Hans Zimmer original score and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The pic won Best Editing and Best Sound at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday.
