Golden Globes 2026 Biggest Winners: Timothée Chalamet, One Battle After Another & More
Jessie Buckley didn’t compare Paul Mescal to a summer’s day.
But she did say she could drink him “like water” during her acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards—comments she clarified a week after when Hamnet won two Golden Globes during the Jan. 11 ceremony. (See the complete list of winners at Golden Globes 2026.)
“I meant that he is essential to what I need and what I’ve discovered as an actor is possible, in what we do in our work,” she explained to reporters backstage. “He brings you to the core of your humanity, and once you know what that is—it becomes like water.”
As for Paul, the 29-year-old is equally effusive in his praise of his costar.
“When the dust settles on all of this awards chat and everything, drama school students are gonna be studying what she did in Hamnet,” Paul added to reporters. “They’re gonna be talking about it forever—and it should be spoken about forever. It’s one of the greatest performances we’re gonna be seeing for years.”
He continued, “We can celebrate the film for the next couple of weeks—fingers crossed we’ll be celebrating her—but the big celebration is in 10, 15, 20 years’ time, we’re gonna be watching what she did forever. And I got to watch it firsthand.”
Jessie has now won Best Female Actor at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes, with Hamnet also earning Best Picture - Drama at the latter.

During her acceptance speech, director Chloe Zhao—who producer Steven Spielberg described as the “one filmmaker on the face of the planet who could tell this story” in his introduction—reflected on what Paul had said to her ahead of the ceremony.
"Making Hamnet made him realize that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are and not who we ought to be,” she said. “And to give ourselves fully to the world.”
Chloe—who was also nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay—continued, “Even the parts of ourselves that we're ashamed of, that we're afraid of, that are imperfect, so the people that we speak to, they can also see themselves and fully accept themselves."
