While 2026 already has plenty of the DC Universe to look forward to, James Gunn now has an exciting update on Creature Commandos season 2's progress. Created by Gunn and showrun by Harley Quinn's Dean Lorey, the 2024 series marked the official launch of the DCU and focused on a new black ops team of metahumans put together by Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and led by Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. as they were sent into a fictional country to stop an Amazonian sorceress' attack, only to discover a deeper conspiracy underneath it all.

Featuring an ensemble cast also led by Indira Varma as The Bride, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Alan Tudyk as multiple characters, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky and David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Creature Commandos season 1 was a critical and ratings hit, securing a season 2 renewal just prior to the finale. Unlike its debut episodes, Lorey is heading up a writers room for season 2, with Gunn confirming he won't be writing every script for the show's return.

Now, during one of his frequent interactions with fans on Threads, Gunn offered an encouraging update on Creature Commandos season 2's progress. The DC Studios head confirmed that the next chapter of the series "is in production now," and responded to a question about when the team will return by denoting it won't be until the show is done being animated. Check out Gunn's response below:

Those aware of the genre's production process likely won't be too surprised by the fact that, in spite of having begun production back in June 2025, Creature Commandos season 2 is still in the midst of its animation production. Even looking at the DCU show's first season, it took close to two years from when its animation entered the pre-production and production stages to when it finally premiered on Max.

As such, if the show is on the same production track as its first outing, it seems likely that Creature Commandos season 2 won't release until Summer 2027. This would stay in line with Gunn's efforts not to oversaturate the market with DCU titles, and to ensure quality control is being properly implemented across every release. It would also give Gunn and the various filmmakers he's working with the chance to figure out how to potentially work the show's storylines and characters into other upcoming properties.

Every Confirmed Upcoming Live-Action DCU TV Show

Here's everything that we know about every confirmed, upcoming live-action series in Chapter One of the DCU.

What will now be interesting to see is how titles released between now and Creature Commandos season 2's arrival will influence the show itself. Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. has become a metahuman-hating figure, and planning to use the alternate dimension of Salvation as a prison for them, while Clayface will make his live-action debut in the Mike Flanagan-penned film, and rumors are swirling of Wonder Woman's debut in Gunn's Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which releases around the time the animated show should return, which also already gave a silhouetted glimpse of the heroine.

That being said, with Gunn also striving to keep things feeling largely self-contained, there's also a chance Creature Commandos season 2 doesn't impact the wider DCU too heavily. There may still be subtle character moments building to larger plans in the future, but Gunn and Lorey may also agree that keeping the zany cast of Task Force M characters separated is the more enticing creative choice for now.
