From the looks of things, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is looking far beyond its namesake when it comes to building its story. At least four games look to be crucial to The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, with Super Mario Galaxy just offering a piece of its foundation.

The title and premise promise Mario and Luigi's next big-screen outing to be a cosmic adventure based heavily on the character's exploits in the 2007 Wii classic, Super Mario Galaxy. But apart from the introduction of Rosalina and a few scenes in the first trailer, the game's influence on the plot hasn't been clear.

Curiously, what's shown in the second trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie gives even less of an impression that the game is the backbone of the movie. In fact, it puts more focus on other installments in the Super Mario series.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Appears To Be Combining Four Different Games

While the first trailer points to a Super Mario Galaxy-inspired adventure for Peach, Mario and Luigi's more closely resembles Super Mario Odyssey, a 2017 game about Mario visiting 14 different worlds in his quest to save Princess Peach.

He and Luigi will seemingly find Yoshi's egg in Odyssey's Sand Kingdom, and at a different point they'll do battle with the game's tyrannosarrus rex, which hails from the same game's Cascade Kingdom.

If the film is indeed incorporating the world-hopping of Odyssey, one of those places may be based on at least a part of Subcon, the main setting of Super Mario Bros. 2. The trailer featured a scene where Princess Peach is in a casino evidently modeled after the game's bonus levels, complete with three Super Mario Bros. 2 characters: Mouser, Birdo, and Clawgrip.

Finally, there's the surprising inclusion of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi alongside Yoshi and Toad as they're being confronted by the tyrannosaurus rex. This calls back to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which was a game about Yoshi's efforts to protect Baby Mario.

Although this story was set in the past, it too could be a short respite in the main characters' adventure, with Mario and Luigi possibly getting reverted into babies and Yoshi having no choice but to take a more proactive role in the action. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could limit this moment to an Easter egg, but it remains to be seen if that's truly the case.
