We're halfway through Season 51 of Saturday Night Live, and it's already been quite an eventful season. So far, we've had a talented lineup of hosts, such as Amy Poehler, Sabrina Carpenter, and Glen Powell, and musical guests including Lily Allen, Doja Cat, and Role Model.
We also said goodbye to fan-favorite cast member Bowen Yang, with host (and his Wicked co-star) Ariana Grande and musical guest Cher joining him for a bittersweet goodbye. Other highlights this season have included the return of Will Forte's MacGruber and the breakout of Featured Player, Ashley Padilla, who has proven that the beloved sketch series will continue to be in safe hands. Read on to find out more about the season and what we can expect from the next episode of SNL.
Bowen Yang Shockingly Exited 'SNL' Mid-Season
Image by PhotagonistAs we mentioned earlier, the scene-stealing Bowen Yang left the show after the December 21 episode. Before taking the stage, Yang joined SNL as a writer in Season 44, but it wasn't long before he was performing, even making an appearance in the season premiere hosted by Adam Driver in the sketch "The New Kyle." Later in the season, he appeared again in the episode hosted by Sandra Oh, where he played Kim Jong-un in the sketch "Kremlin Meeting."
Yang was officially promoted to be a Featured Player the following season, alongside Chloe Fineman, becoming the series' first Chinese-American cast member. In 2021, he became the first Featured Player to ever be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award (for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series). In Season 47, he was promoted once again to become a Repertory Player. Over the course of his run on the show, Yang played plenty of memorable characters, including VP JD Vance, George Santos, The Iceberg That Sank the Titanic, Moo Deng, one of the Trend Forecasters, and Umberto, the TSA Agent. In his final episode on the show, he reprised the latter two roles, with former cast member Aidy Bryant joining him.

Thankfully, Yang continues to stay busy, including being the co-host of the pop-culture podcast Las Culturistas alongside Matt Rogers. He has appeared in plenty of films and television series, including both Wicked films, Bros, Fire Island, Dicks the Musical, The Wedding Banquet, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, and Girls5eva. Up next, Yang is a voice in Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, which is due out later this year. He is also writing a movie alongside Rogers.
Who Are the Best Hosts of 'SNL' Season 51 So Far?
From Josh O'Connor to Melissa McCarthy, there has been no shortage of great hosts this season on SNL. But the three that have done the best work are Ariana Grande, Glen Powell, and Sabrina Carpenter.
Grande hosted the December 20 episode, the Christmas episode, promoting the release of Wicked: For Good. This marked her third time hosting the show, and her second time hosting without being the musical guest, with icon Cher performing instead. The episode had a Cold Open revolving around Trump renaming the Kennedy Center, with other sketches including "Elf on the Shelf Support Group," "Home Alone," "Black Santa," "Love is Blind Reunion," and the return of "Delta Lounge" as Yang addressed his departure from the show as Umberto.
Powell hosted the November 15 episode, promoting the release of The Running Man, and marking his Studio 8H debut. He was joined by musical guest Olivia Dean. The episode began with a Cold Open parodying Donald Trump addressing the Jeffrey Epstein emails, with other sketches including "AI Photos," "I Miss My Ex's Dad," "Sebastian Maniscalco," "Norwegian Movie," and "Haircut." Most notably, =Will Forte returned, reprising his role as MacGruber in a three-part sketch about the Epstein files.
Pop superstar Carpenter pulled double duty as the host and the musical guest on the October 18 episode. Carpenter previously performed as a musical guest on a Season 49 episode as well as the 50th Anniversary Special, but this episode marked her first time actually hosting the show as well. Sketches on the episode included the return of Marcello Hernández's Domingo, "Boys Podcast: Snack Homiez," "Plans," "Social Experiment," and "Appliance Store."
Will There Be a New Episode of 'SNL' Tonight?
Image via NBCNo, there will not be a new episode of SNL tonight. The next episode of SNL, Season 51, Episode 10, will air on Saturday, January 17, at 11:30 pm EST, both on NBC and streaming on Peacock. The new episode will also be available to stream on Peacock afterward, along with every other season of the show.
'Stranger Things' Star Finn Wolfhard Hosts the Next 'SNL' Episode
Image via NetflixFor the January 17 episode, Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard will be taking the stage as the host for the first time. He'll be accompanied by musical guest A$AP Rocky. Wolfhard's run as the creative, lovelorn, teenage misfit, Mike Wheeler on the blockbuster Netflix series came to an end when the two-hour series finale dropped on New Year's Eve. Fans are still debating the finale and Season 5 as a whole, so it's safe to expect one or two sketches tied to the beloved series. Maybe they will address that bizarre Conformity Gate theory floating around.
The January 24 episode will be hosted by One Battle After Another's Teyana Taylor, who is an Oscar frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actress Category. She'll be joined by musical guest, Geese.
The January 31 episode will be hosted by Alexander Skarsgård, in time for his new movie Pillion. Cardi B will be the musical guest.
