With another Hunger Games prequel set to release in 2026, Tom Blyth, who played young Coriolanus Snow, addresses his future with the franchise. While Blyth has been acting for over a decade, with films like Benediction and Scott and Syd, it was his performance as an 18-year-old Coriolanus in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes that put him on the map in Hollywood.
The late Donald Sutherland iconized the Panem president in the first four Hunger Games movies. Blyth has only played him once, but audiences were quickly captured by his complex performance. Although the iconic villain will return in the upcoming prequel movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, Ralph Fiennes will take over the role as the president would be in his 50s during the timeline.
While speaking with Decider, Blyth was asked if he would be returning in any capacity, such as a potential flashback for Sunrise on the Reaping, but the young Snow star asserted that he was “not involved in the new one. Sorry to disappoint.”
However, he still keeps his hopes that “who knows if it’s the end of Coriolanus’s story, in terms of my track. We always take Suzanne Collins as lead. Lionsgate doesn’t make the films without her making the book first. If she decides to go back and revisit my timeline, then I would absolutely get involved.” He continued, “And if not, I am the biggest fan of all those people, and it’s really nice to watch them thrive.”
The conversation then pivoted to whether Fiennes had ever communicated with him about the role. Blyth reiterated that “he hasn’t reached out” before joking that “I’m kind of shocked he hasn’t asked me for advice. [Laughs.] I’m being sarcastic, obviously, because there’s no advice I could give that man that would help him at all. Honestly, it’s just really cool to watch one of my idols, that I’ve been watching for years, play a role that I was lucky to play.”
Snow became the focus of his own story in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, revealing what triggered the young Panem student to transform into a merciless and ambitious dictator in his villainous journey. The first Hunger Games prequel took place during the 10th Hunger Games, which was won by the first District 12 winner, Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler).
On the other hand, Sunrise on the Reaping fast-forwards to the 50th Hunger Games, which was also known as the Second Quarter Quell. It’s considered one of the most brutal versions, with Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) winning the games against 47 other tributes.
While it had seemed that the Hunger Games stories concluded with Katniss Everdeen, Suzanne Collins shocked the world with the first prequel novel. Just months after The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes was released, a prequel based on Haymitch’s game was announced, and Lionsgate quickly confirmed a movie adaptation.
Like Blyth, franchise director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson are adamant about continuing the franchise, but that’s only if Collins plans to write more books. As of writing, there is no confirmation of any more books in the Hunger Games universe. Sunrise on the Reaping would also be the last story to cover any District 12 winner since they had a total of four victors.
Nevertheless, there has been strong fan demand for prequel stories based on District 4’s Finnick Odair and District 7’s Joanna Mason.
Blyth, unfortunately, will not be reprising his iconic role anytime soon, but original stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will return as District 12 winners Katniss and Peeta Mellark, respectively. It’s the first time in over a decade that the duo will come back to the franchise, as it’s expected that their returns are related to the epilogue sequence in the novel.
On the other hand, Blyth can be seen in Netflix's new movie People We Meet on Vacation, while his Watch Dog adaptation is currently in post-production. It currently doesn't have a release date.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026.
