Hugh Jackman’s next movie after The Sheep Detectives (Bryan Cranston) has finally released its long-awaited first trailer. A24 has premiered the first official look at The Death of Robin Hood, the new historical thriller following Robin Hood (Jackman) as he grapples with his past life of crime and murder. He finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation. The tag line for the film, as seen on the first poster for the film Jackman shared yesterday, reads: “He was no hero.” This is clearly a different take on the Robin Hood tale, particularly Russell Crowe’s 2010 film from Ridley Scott, in which Robin is undoubtedly the hero of his story.
Starring opposite Jackman in The Death of Robin Hood is Jodie Comer, who is best known for starring in The Last Duel. She’s also famous for her work alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson in 28 Years Later. Bill Skarsgard, famed for playing Pennywise in Stephen King’s IT movies, can also be seen in The Death of Robin Hood. The film was written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, who recently directed the horror prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One. He’s also famous for his work directing Pig, the critically acclaimed Nicolas Cage movie that’s currently streaming on Netflix.
Jackman is best known for playing Wolverine, first in the Fox X-Men movies and later in the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine. He’s expected to return later this year in Avengers: Doomsday, but this has not been officially confirmed. Jackman is also a knockout stage and musical performer, as seen by his work in other musicals such as The Greatest Showman. Another project on the slate for Jackman is The Sheep Detectives, the aforementioned whodunnit comedy coming to theaters on May 8, 2026.
Hugh Jackman’s Future at Marvel Is in the Air
It’s been confirmed that X-Men stars such as Patrick Stewart and James Marsden will reprise their roles as Professor X and Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday, but word about Jackman’s involvement is being kept under wraps. Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool have become two of Marvel’s most popular characters, so it would certainly be surprising to see them not utilized in some way in the upcoming event films. However, Marvel is reportedly looking for younger talent to play a new generation of X-Men after Secret Wars and usher in a new era of mutants in the MCU.
