The box office for Hugh Jackman's new biopic, Song Sung Blue, is about to pass his movie that won the Razzie for Worst Picture. Song Sung Blue is based on the true story of the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder, with Jackman playing Mike Sardina (Lightning) and Kate Hudson playing Claire Sardina (Thunder).
According to The Numbers, Song Sung Blue has now earned 30.7 million worldwide, which means it is closing in on Razzie winner Movie 43, which made $31.2 million globally. Jackman's latest movie has grossed $25.6 million domestically and $5.1 million internationally.
Movie 43 was released in 2013 and features a collection of wild storylines pitched by writer Charlie Wessler (Dennis Quaid) to a Hollywood executive. The various storylines in the film feature a variety of A-list stars, including Jackman as Davis in a segment called "The Catch."
With a dismal 5% score from critics and 25% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, Movie 43 was not well-received. Along with Worst Picture, it won Razzies for Worst Director and Worst Screenplay. Despite this, it was a box office success considering it was made on a reported budget of $6 million.
In comparison to Movie 43, reviews for Song Sung Blue have been far more favorable. The biopic holds a "Certified Fresh" 77% score from critics and a "Verified Hot" 98% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Many critics praised Jackman and Hudson's performances and felt that the film was more than a retread of the Song Sung Blue documentary released in 2008.
