Hugh Jackman’s New ‘Robin Hood’ Movie Channels Old Man Logan

A beat-up, grizzled old warrior played by Hugh Jackman deals with the consequences of his violent past as he takes a young woman under his wing, hoping for redemption. Yes, that is the plot of Jackman’s 2017 Marvel masterpiece, Logan, but it also describes his upcoming movie, The Death of Robin Hood, which just released its first trailer.

Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One), The Death of Robin Hood stars Jackman as the titular legend, who doesn’t consider himself to be a legend at all. Instead, he feels like a man struggling between the reality of who he is and what people imagine him to be. Rather than someone who robs from the rich and gives to the poor, it seems more like he kills the rich and that’s it. But when he meets a woman played by Jodie Comer, he sees a chance to change that. Here’s the first trailer for The Death of Robin Hood.

In addition to the trailer, A24 also released this excellent teaser poster for the film.

Both the trailer and the poster make one thing clear. This is not the Robin Hood we are used to. And that’s a good thing. There are entirely too many films, shows, and more about Robin Hood. Some are classics, but most are not, so to get someone like Jackman on board, you had to think this version would stand apart from the rest. And it seems like it does.

Along for the ride with Jackman and Comer are Pennywise himself, Bill Skarsgård, as well as White Lotus star Murray Bartlett and A Quiet Place‘s Noah Jupe. We don’t know how any of them fit in specifically, but it’s a strong set of supporting actors.

Let’s be real here, though. Even if it wasn’t Jackman in the leading role, The Death of Robin Hood feels a whole lot like Logan. A man believed to be a hero who doesn’t believe it himself. Young child seen as a way to right their wrongs. The difference here is that Sarnoski is channeling not James Mangold but Robert Eggers with his level of violence and detail. Will that marriage pay off? We’ll find out later this year.
