As you explore the cubic frontiers of Hytale, you’ll realize all too soon that the Crude tools and weapons that helped kick-start your journey just aren’t gonna cut it forever.

This is where Iron comes in. Iron is one of the most important early-game crafting materials in Hytale, since it allows you to upgrade past the first tier of tools and equipment available to you at the start of the game. It’s the stepping stone to greater things, but you’ll have to delve deeper to find it.

As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, Hytale doesn’t present you with a chance to harvest Iron on the surface. Instead, you’ll have to dive deep into the bowels of the Earth and seek it out there. You’re gonna need a pickaxe, but if you’re looking for Iron to upgrade your weapons, chances are you already have a working Workbench set up. I’d also recommend crafting a few torches; it gets dark pretty fast down there.

Digging straight down from wherever you’re standing is always a valid option, but the world of Orbis is full of deep chasms that can provide you with a natural entrance to the cavernous depths below. One was waiting for me right near my spawn point, but you might need to explore a bit to find one yourself.

Luckily, you probably won’t have to stay down in the depths very long. Iron spawns at about fifty to one hundred blocks below the surface, so you don’t have to dig too deep to find it. Don’t worry about not being able to identify which rocks have Iron Ore in them; the giant chunks of shiny Iron ore jabbing out are a big giveaway.

As exciting as finding Iron is, don’t get carried away. You need to refine your Iron Ore into an Iron Ingot before you can use it to craft new equipment.

To forge Iron Ore into Iron Ingots, you’ll need to use your Workbench to build a Furnace. This is a very simple craft to make. All you need to make it is six Tree Trunks and six chunks of Stone. Once you’ve made a Furnace, stick some wood into the Fuel slot, then put the Iron Ore into one of the Input slots. In a few seconds, you’ll have some fresh Iron Ingots on your hands.
