Netflix's His & Hers didn't disappoint with its twist ending. The miniseries, based on the best-selling novel by Alice Feeney, revolves around estranged married couple Anna (Tessa Thompson) and Jack (Jon Bernthal), as they maneuver a murder investigation. The victim was Anna's high school friend Rachel (Jamie Tisdale), who also happened to be a frequent hookup of Jack's. This naturally made both characters possible suspects, a fact that's even more complicated considering Jack is the lead detective on the case.

Things get more intense in His & Hers when another body turns up. Rachel's friend Helen (Poppy Liu)—another old acquaintance of Anna's—is also found murdered. Anna, who found the body, becomes a person of interest while Jack comes under suspicion from his new partner, Priya (Sunita Mani).

Finally, there's a third victim, Jack's sister Zoe (Marin Ireland), and it seems for a moment that all the pieces are coming together. Anna discovers that her work nemesis, Lexy (Rebecca Rittenhouse), is secretly another old high school friend whom Rachel, Helen, and Zoe bullied. It appeared that the killer of His & Hers was identified, but the show's final moments pulled the rug out from under us.

Who The True Killer Was In His & Her

Alice in His & Hers

It really seemed at the end of His & Hers that Lexy was the killer. She had every reason to want Rachel, Helen, and Zoe dead, and we even got a flashback to what appeared to be Lexy being assaulted while these girls watched on. Moreover, Rachel's fingernails were found stashed away in Lexy's room—case closed. A year after Lexy was shot and killed by Priya, however, Anna reads a letter from her mother, Alice (Crystal R. Fox), explaining the full truth. Lexy wasn't the killer; Alice was.

After Anna's infant child tragically died, she ran away, telling no one where she had gone. In an effort to feel close to her daughter, Alice began going through Anna's old high school tapes. It was then that she saw that Lexy's friends had set her up to be sexually assaulted on her 16th birthday.

Filled with motherly rage, Alice set out on a mission to murder Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. She used her experience as a maid and janitor to get through locks and effectively clean the crime scenes, all the while pretending to be in the early stages of dementia to avoid suspicion. Finally, Alice framed Lexy for the crimes, intending to punish her for failing to help Anna all those years ago.

Alice was correct in His & Hers that no one would suspect an old woman of violent, premeditated murder. Even the astute Priya, who pieced together Jack's involvement and Lexy's identity, never considered the deteriorating old woman she had spoken with. It made for an exceptional final twist.

Lexy’s Secret Identity Explained

Lexy in His & Hers

It was hard to see His & Hers' Alice twist coming, since the series had already handed us an exceptional surprise. It was clear from the first episode that Lexy was a real piece of work, but there was no indication that this woman was the bullied girl in Anna's high school flashbacks. Back then, she was called Catherine, but she changed her name to Lexi in an effort to redefine herself. Her secret identity was quite damning, and it was easy enough to believe that Lexy was the killer. She was the perfect person for Alice to frame for her crimes.

Alice didn't mean for Lexy to die. The final moments of His & Hers reveal that the old woman had only intended Lexy to be arrested. Still, it's hard to feel too sorry for her. Lexy didn't kill her high school bullies, but she did murder her sister, Andrea, while they were teenagers. As Alice said in His & Hers, Lexy's death wasn't something to lose sleep over.

What Happened At Anna’s 16th Birthday

Anna's 16th birthday party was the catalyst for the murders of His & Hers. Throughout the show's six episodes, the full details of that night are gradually made clear. Rachel, Helen, and Zoe surprised Anna with a party out in the woods, inviting Catherine (Lexy) to come along. As the girls became more and more intoxicated, a group of boys arrived, offering more alcohol.

When Alice watched the tape from Anna's party, she saw that Rachel had essentially sold her friends' bodies, accepting payment from the boys and permitting them to rape Catherine. Anna attempted to stop them, but the boys only turned their violence on her while Catherine escaped (abandoning Anna to her fate). Alice watched in agony the recording of her daughter being raped while Rachel, Helen, and Zoe disturbingly sang "Happy Birthday." Whether they deserved to be murdered is up to the viewer, but these girls were certainly despicable.

All Five Victims In His & Hers Explained

A dead body on a car in His & Hers

There were four murders total in His & Hers. Alice killed Rachel, Helen, and Zoe for what they had done to Anna, and Lexy murdered her sister, Andrea, in what can only be called cold blood. Then there was Lexy, who, though not technically murdered, died as the direct result of Alice's vengeance.

Rachel

Rachel's was the murder that got everything started in His & Hers. In the final episode, we see that Alice sliced Rachel's tire while the woman was still in Jack's truck, ensuring she couldn't leave the scene. Once Jack drove away, Alice approached Rachel. The latter woman felt entirely unthreatened by Alice's approach, so she never saw the knife coming. As a final act of vengeance, Alice tied Rachel's friendship bracelet around the corpse's tongue.

Helen

Alice easily entered the locked girls' academy through the faulty door that students often used to sneak late into classes. This made the crime far simpler. Alice only had to quietly approach Helen and slit her throat. Once again, His & Hers' murderer left a friendship bracelet tied around her victim's throat, but took things even further by stapling Helen's eyes closed and writing "liar" on her forehead.

Zoe

Zoe knew that the killer would be coming for her next, but Jack assured her that she would be safe. Once again, it was no real issue for Alice to break into the house. She stabbed and drowned Zoe in the tub, leaving her there for Jack to find later. It's never explicitly stated in His & Hers whether Alice left her friendship-bracelet calling card again.

Andrea

Lexy killed Andrea when both girls were teenagers. The flashback to the event in His & Hers reveals that Andrea was cruel to her sister, mocking her for her weight. So, as their family prepared to head out for a day on the lake, Lexy secretly emptied Andrea's inhaler. While on the boat, Andrea suffered an asthma attack and died before the family could return to shore.

Lexy

It's hard to define Lexy's death as murder, but she was still a victim in His & Hers. In the final moment of her tussle with Anna, Lexy picked up her opponent's gun and fired it, not realizing that it was already empty. Priya, naturally, didn't know this either. From outside the house, she fired a single bullet into Lexy's head in an effort to save Jack and Anna.

Will Anna Turn Her Mother In After His & Hers’ Ending?

The last thing we see in His & Hers is Anna's face as she looks at her mother and understands all she had done to defend her. It's evident that Alice felt entirely at peace with her choices. She had viciously murdered three women and caused the death of a fourth. However, to Alice, these were the actions of a mother; a fierce protector willing to do anything for their child. The big question was whether Anna would feel that way as well.

There's no sign of disgust on Anna's face in His & Hers ending. She not only understands what her mother did, but she is grateful for it. As a mother who had been unable to protect her late daughter, Anna knew full well the feeling that had motivated Alice. It's something that would forever bond them. His & Hers ending leaves the continued story ambiguous, but there's every indication that Anna will take this secret to her grave.
