Hans Zimmer Says It’s a ‘Shame’ the Golden Globes Won’t Air Original Score Category: ‘Don’t Ignore’ Composers Because ‘You Don’t Have a Movie Without Them’

Ahead of the Golden Globes on Sunday, legendary film composer and music producer Hans Zimmer responded to the award show’s decision not to televise the best original score category.

“I think it’s a shame not to honor those people — my friends — who work so hard to become a voice,” Zimmer told Variety’s Angelique Jackson, referring to his fellow composers and adding that they help give a film tone and navigate its emotional content.

“As a person who has been making films forever, everybody who works on a film works their utmost, doesn’t get any sleep, there are no weekends. Sometimes my children wonder who I am — I come into the house and they call the police,” Zimmer added humorously. “I think the work should always be acknowledged… This year is a fantastic year for composers — don’t ignore them, you don’t have a movie without them.”

Nominated this year for his work in “F1,” Zimmer is a 17-time Golden Globe nominee for best original score in a motion picture, and three-time winner, taking home awards for “Dune” (2022), “Gladiator” (2001), and “The Lion King” (2004).

“F1” is a sports drama film starring Brad Pitt as a Formula One racing driver who is convinced to come out of retirement and train a rookie prodigy (Damson Idris) for the Apex Grand Prix race. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film is also nominated for the cinematic and box office achievement category.

Other nominees for best original score include Alexandre Desplat (“Frankenstein”), Ludwig Göransson (“Sinners”), Jonny Greenwood (“One Battle After Another”), Kangding Ray (“Sirāt”), and Max Richter (“Hamnet”).

The one upside to the category not being televised?

“It means I don’t have to make an insane speech and embarrass humanity as we know it,” joked Zimmer.
