Golden Globes Host Nikki Glaser Says Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts and George Clooney Have All Been A “Tough Nut” To Crack In Joke Writing

Will it be a sophomore slump or comeback of the year for comedian and returning Golden Globes hostess Nikki Glaser? When talking to Deadline at the Golden Globes red carpet preview event on Thursday, Glaser is certainly hoping for the latter.

Admitting that she was “too prepared to fail,” the comedian-actress highlighted that she’s been practicing (“at least 75 times”) and showcasing her material for Sunday night’s 83rd annual Golden Globes ceremony all across various comedy clubs in LA. “These are some of my favorite jokes I’ve ever written,” Glaser said.

With even more notable celebrities in attendance this year, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts and George Clooney, who exactly should be on alert for Glaser’s spicy opening monologue? “Julia, Leo and George have all been a tough nut to crack because they are such legendary Hollywood figures, and I can’t believe I’m in the position of being able to talk about these people,” Glaser continued. “I’m going to take a couple of chances; everyone is fair game, but I won’t [hard] enough to ruin anyone’s evening. I have empathy for the hard work that these people do. I hope everyone can relax, be comfortable and have a good time.”

How exactly does Glaser plan on repeating her success? Glaser said she looked back at last year’s opening monologue for inspiration. “I saw that I did my best and had no regrets. When I looked, all I saw was, ‘Wow, that girl had so much fun.’ And that’s when I knew [the material I have now] was foolproof.”

Glaser admitted that she would be lying if she said that she didn’t put any pressure on herself at all, though in the midst of preparation for the big day. “The pressure always comes from myself, because of course [in a situation like this], you’re always trying to top yourself. It always has to be better. In the days leading up, there have definitely been those moments where I spiral and go, ‘What are you going to do?’ There’s certainly some stages of grief. But then when I step up on that stage, everything is going to be fine – after the monologue.”

Glaser also mentioned that she reads Deadline news blasts, Alan Sepinwall and combs the industry subreddit threads to keep current on all the latest Hollywood industry news and gossip—subjects that will surely show up throughout the upcoming Golden Globes night.

Heading into Sunday night, Glaser said she’s received words of encouragement from fellow comedians such as Jimmy Kimmel, Dax Shepard, and former Golden Globes hosts Seth Meyers, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. “Nearly everyone that I’ve talked to has been so enthusiastic about [my return]. It’s been really cool to get feedback from other comedians because they know how hard this gig is. So, when they say, ‘You really killed it,’ that means so much to me because it’s my job to make this all look easy, but it’s not. I didn’t even realize how hard this was until I hosted it. When I watched this as a [viewer], I just thought, ‘I can’t wait to do that someday.’ And now, I’m so glad to be doing it, but it really is difficult to write jokes that America [at large] is going to understand about really specific movies that maybe not everyone has seen and about celebrities that are in the room that might take offense. It’s really difficult to strike the right tone. But I’m ready.”

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday, Jan 8, 5 P.M. at the Beverly Hilton. It’s airing on CBS and Paramount+ and is produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Deadline’s parent company, PMC.
