Will 2026 be the year the A Song of Ice and Fire faithful finally receive The Winds of Winter, the sequel George R.R. Martin has been working on for well over a decade? You don’t need seven gods to tell you… probably not. However, Game of Thrones fans do have stuff to look forward to more immediately. Season three of House of the Dragon is coming in a few months—and even sooner, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premieres January 18 and adapts Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. In a new interview, Martin said he’d love to get around to writing more of those Dunk and Egg tales.
It’s something he’s touched on in the past, and no doubt fans of the stories, following the very tall knight Dunk and his scrappy little squire, Egg, would love to read more. Demand will no doubt increase once the show hits HBO; to date, there are only three Dunk and Egg stories. The first, “The Hedge Knight,” is adapted for season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the already greenlit season two will presumably adapt the second, “The Sworn Sword.”
If a third season happens and adapts “The Mystery Knight,” HBO will be in a Game of Thrones situation if it wants a fourth season, with no prewritten material to bring to the screen.
We all know what happened when Game of Thrones was let off the leash. So in that respect, encouraging more Dunk and Egg on the page is a good thing, even if it means The Winds of Winter gets a pin put in it (again). Plus, as fans of Martin well know, the Dunk and Egg stories are delightful; set apart from the highborn hijinks of Westeros, they are small-scale adventures with vivid characters that put a whole new perspective on Martin’s world.
Speaking on the official A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms podcast (via CBR; you can listen to the whole interview below, starting around 25 minutes in), Martin dropped a big tease. “There are more stories to tell about Dunk and Egg and their education and what’s going to befall them in future years,” he said, though he added he’d also need to find the time to write them.
Fans of A Song and Ice and Fire will know a bit about Dunk and Egg’s destinies already—no spoilers!—but to get a story showing a slice-of-life moment featuring older versions of the characters would indeed be a treat.
However, we would like to get our grubby mitts on The Winds of Winter eventually as well.
