Out of all the games in the franchise, Far Cry 3 easily stands out as one of the most iconic Ubisoft offerings, making its absence on modern hardware all the more noticeable. Although its successors have almost all received some welcome updates to smooth over the experience, Far Cry 3 might finally get its chance to shine again if Ubisoft's recent social media activity is anything to go by.

With the holidays now being over, the official Far Cry account on X has been much more active on X, which includes reacting with cheeky images or gifs in response to fans asking for franchise updates. While most of these don't stand out too much on their own, the most notable are surprisingly optimistic responses to fans asking for a 60fps update to Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon.

Is Far Cry 3 Getting A Next-Gen Update?

While these responses are far from any official confirmation, it would be a strange marketing decision to cryptically tease a project fans have been demanding for so long without anything concrete behind it. The posts are fueling speculation that next-generation updates for Far Cry 3 and its spin-off are on the way.

In response to a question about whether Far Cry was officially gone after a lack of updates, the account also provided confirmation that the franchise is "not going anywhere," which makes it seem like it's only a matter of time before the new era of the series starts with Far Cry 7.

Far Cry 7 is currently rumored to be releasing in late 2026 or 2027, depending on delays.

Even if Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon both still hold up surprisingly well, being locked to 30fps and not having access to higher resolutions does limit the full potential of the experience, which could easily be fixed with a single next-generation update rather than a full-blown remaster.

It's More Likely Than You'd Think

With Far Cry 3 still being one of the best Ubisoft games and the highest-rated entry in the franchise, it's more of a surprise that it's taken so long for a next-generation update to come about at all.

Combined with the fact that Ubisoft seems to be going in reverse order with their next-gen updates of Far Cry 5 in 2023 and Far Cry 4 in 2025, Far Cry 3 seems like the next logical step for the series to follow. While this does mean there might still be another year before we see Far Cry 3 take advantage of modern hardware, it's far from the only project on the horizon.

With a new anthology series on the way from Hulu to explore a variety of different locales from the series and those that never saw a game appearance, it's an even greater opportunity for Ubisoft to revisit some of the best games in the series, like Far Cry 3, once more.
