Fans of Fallout 3 are convinced a remake announcement is imminent since a mysterious countdown appeared online. Rumors of a Fallout 3 remake or remaster have been circulating for a while now, and were only intensified after the sudden release of the Oblivion remaster last year. They've since quieted down absent any official news from Bethesda.
Now, though, Fallout 3 remaster rumors have resurfaced, and this time, they're all centered on a mysterious countdown on the TV adaptation's official website. As spotted in a Reddit post by lorenzogatta00, the series' "Explore" page sports an unexplained countdown scheduled to hit zero on February 4. Some fans are hopeful this could be the day of a major announcement for the video game wing of the franchise.
What Is Fallout Counting Down To?
Multiple Possibilities
The official Fallout website is structured to resemble a Pip-Boy map as it appears in the video game series. A handful of landmarks appear throughout: a few that allow you to freely explore 3D recreations of settings from the show, one that links you to Amazon tie-in products, and another that simply says "Coming soon" with a countdown to February 4.
It's worth noting that February 4 is also the scheduled release date of the Fallout streaming series' season two finale. However, it's likely not counting down to the end of the season alone; there'd be no need to hide that, as the release date has already been announced.
Some fans have speculated that Amazon is planning to drop some sort of season three teaser on February 4, which is certainly within the realm of possibility. If that's the case, we likely won't see any real footage of Fallout's next season, as it's not set to begin filming until May.
A Fallout 3 Remake Isn't Impossible
But Don't Get Your Hopes Up
A more hopeful class of fan, though, insists that February 4 is the day a Fallout 3 remaster gets revealed, or even shadow dropped like Oblivion. It's certainly possible: it's well-known that interest in the Fallout games spikes every time the series gets a new season, and Bethesda has already put out a couple rounds of tie-in content for Fallout 76.
It would almost certainly sell well. Released in 2008, Fallout 3 was the first 3D game in the series, and the first to be developed by Bethesda, marking a major turning point for the franchise. It's also unavailable for modern consoles, except via backwards compatibility on Xbox, which would make it totally new to younger fans of the series.
For what it's worth, Bethesda director Todd Howard told GamesRadar that he's heard the calls for a Fallout 3 remaster, and is interested in doing more shadow drops in the future. "We see it, we're working on a whole bunch of stuff, and we look forward to the day that we can reveal them."
