Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a month away, but you'll be able to dig into its opening hours soon enough. A free demo for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined will release Jan. 7. You'll be able to carry over any progress you make to the main game when it launches in February.

Reimagined is a remake of the seminal RPG from 2000, originally called Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Unlike recent Dragon Quest remakes, like last fall's Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined will eschew the HD-2D trend and instead be a 3D remake. Its levels look like dioramas, and the characters are almost toy-like.

It'll reimagine plenty of aspects of the original game. Like other modern RPGs, such as Metaphor: ReFantazio, you'll be able to take down weak enemies in the overworld without having to initiate turn-based combat. You'll also be able to speed up combat to power through easy fights quickly. Reimagined also adds a new vocation for players to take on, as well as the ability to take on a second vocation.

Players put off by the bloat of the original game, whose main quest could easily take 100 hours to complete, might want to keep an eye on the remake. It's been designed in a way to cut down on bloat and to improve the game's pacing. “Even with the 3DS version of [Dragon Quest 7], the story was still quite long. So we came to a decision that we wanted to streamline the story, [and] make this experience for modern audiences," producer Takeshi Ichikawa told Polygon in Nov. 2025.

You can start seeing what the remake is all about when its demo is released Wednesday, Jan 7. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined will be released on Feb. 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
