The film, which opens the Dublin International Film Festival, has sold to A Contra Corriente (Spain), Cinemundo (Portugal), Rialto (Australia), Tanweer (Greece), Ricochet (World Airlines), and Break Out Pictures (Ireland).

The film’s synopsis reads: Set over the course of one eventful evening in a cinema in 1980s Ireland, a cinema owner wrestles with the legacy of the past and the challenges of the future in a drama that is touching, funny, and rings of authenticity.

The film’s ensemble features Colin Morgan (Belfast), Calam Lynch (Sweetpea), Niamh Cusack (In the Land of Saints and Sinners), India Mullen (Normal People), Stanley Townsend (Kaos, Andor), and Clara Crichton.

Backed by Screen Ireland, Once Upon A Time In A Cinema is a European co-production from Ireland’s Wide Eye Films and Umedia in Belgium. It is produced by Nathalie Lichtenthaeler (Wide Eye) and Judy Tossell for Tossell Pictures. Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico and Trish Vasquez serve as Executive Producers.

“This film is a celebration of a peculiarly Irish cinema experience in a time when you could still smoke, and the crowd was often more entertaining than the film,” Gleeson said of the film. “It’s a heartfelt celebration of an experience that’s brought us together for generations, forging connections that we long for today more than ever.”
