The underseen rom-com from last year, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life (Jane Austen a gâché ma vie), has now become a worldwide hit on streaming. Originally premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life premiered theatrically in France and the U.S. in 2025 and achieved strong reviews but flew under the radar of wider recognition.

Written and directed by Laura Piani and starring Camille Rutherford, Pablo Pauly, and Charlie Anson, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life follows introverted Parisian writer and bookseller Agathe, who attends a Jane Austen writers' residency in England after her best friend submits the first chapters of a novel she has no idea how to finish. The movie currently has an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score.

And now, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is the No. 7 movie in the world on HBO Max, per FlixPatrol. Currently, it ranks above three installments of the Harry Potter franchise, while the top five spots are occupied by another Harry Potter, the How to Train Your Dragon movies, Anya Taylor-Joy's Split, and Critics' Choice Best Picture winner One Battle After Another.

However, while Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is becoming popular on HBO Max, it is actually available on Netflix for those in the U.S. Disaster movie The Great Flood and murder mystery Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery are still dominating Netflix, but with this availability, the rom-com could potentially also become a hit domestically later on, as more people hear about it.

Netflix compares Jane Austen Wrecked My Life to other understated romances with a literary bent, including Persuasion, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and Blue Is the Warmest Color. Additionally, I personally reviewed Jane Austen Wrecked My Life for ScreenRant and gave it an 8 out of 10 stars, and would say it is "not your average rom-com nor your average dose of literary cottagcore."

Writer-director Piani is known for writing one episode of the TV series Spiral and six episodes of Plan B, while she is now reportedly working on the new series The Country of Others, based on Leïla Slimani's novel of the same name. Star Camille Rutherford also features in Blue Is the Warmest Color and 2024 Best Picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall.

As this year's biggest awards season movies gradually make their way onto streaming and digital, there are still some underrated titles to check out. In the new year, people have the chance to search for the best hidden gems in 2025, and this streaming data suggests that many have already discovered Jane Austen Wrecked My Life.
