Bill Maher Says Woke Hollywood Will “Never” Give Him An Emmy

At the Golden Globes on Sunday, presenter Wanda Sykes offered a bit of advice to Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television nominee Bill Maher: “You give us so much. But I would love a little less. Just try less.”

Maher lost, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be taking Sykes’ advice any time soon.

On this week’s addition of his Club Random podcast — which was taped before the show — fellow nominee Joel Edgerton asked the Real Time host about his vibe going into the event.

“How do you feel going in?” Edgerton asked. “To me — and maybe it’s because I’ve always set my ceiling quite low in life — like, being nominated to me is a win.”

Maher replied, “Sweetheart, I’ve been nominated for 33 Emmys, and they would never give it to me. That’s not a gag number. That’s a real number. It’s crazy.

Actually, according to a search of the Television Academy’s website, Maher has been nominated 58 times. And he has won once: in 2014 for the series Vice, which was co-produced by his Bill Maher Productions.

The 33 nominations Maher is citing seem to be in line with the number for his Primetime shows going all the way back to Politically Incorrect in 1995. But in the Podcast conversation, Maher specifically lumped in his standup specials and his producing efforts, such as Vice, to make his case for being snubbed.

“Obviously, it’s something I said,” he claimed, before expounding, “Well, it’s everything I said.”

He later continued, “Because I speak freely. And this woke town f*cking hates that. And that’s okay. I’ve made my peace with that.”

Maher went on to say that it would be a “miracle” if he won. “I really should be shocked.”
