Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Batman #5We're only five issues into Batman's brand-new era in DC Comics, and his secret identity was just exposed by one of the last people I saw coming. As such, it's already evident that The Dark Knight is going to be facing some pretty unique challenges as this new series continues.
Coming from Matt Fraction and Jorge Jimenez, DC's new Batman series has been exploring the mythology of Gotham and Bruce Wayne's crusade in all-new ways. This includes a refreshing new focus on Bruce Wayne himself beyond the cape and cowl, though not without some surprising twists as we've just seen in the all-new Batman #5.
In Batman #5, Bruce Wayne's "Date Night" Took A Violent Turn
While they're adamant in this new issue that their night out together "wasn't a date", Bruce Wayne and Annika Zeller's chemistry is off the charts, suggesting the Arkham Towers doctor will soon become Batman's new love interest.
However, things take a turn when Zeller is pursued by multiple killers, presumably due to her new device meant to drastically rehabilitate patients' brains, known as the "Crown of Storms."
This creates a unique opportunity for Bruce to protect Zeller outside his typical costume and gadgets as Batman. However, Bruce eventually receives some helpful backup when confronted by the new villain known as The Ojo (recently renamed from Lady Death Man).
Damian Wayne's Robin Outed Bruce Wayne As Batman (Accidentally)
Forcing The Ojo to retreat with a well-placed EMP "Batsnare", Damian Wayne's Robin is a little too proud of himself. This apparently results in Damian being less aware than one would expect, as he hadn't clocked Zeller around the corner of the rooftop before calling Bruce Wayne "father", which Annika hears and is justifiably confused.
If looks from Bruce Wayne could kill, Damian would be dead right now (making for one of the funniest modern-day Batman comic panels I've ever seen).
While this surprising reveal closes out Batman #5, readers can bet that future issues will see Bruce having to deal with the fallout of his identity being exposed. That said, this will likely help Zeller become an even greater ally to both Wayne and Batman in more ways than one, even if it isn't happening at all how Bruce intended (thanks a lot, Robin).
Batman #5 is on sale now from DC Comics.
