BAFTA Awards 2026 longlist: Leonardo Di Caprio thriller One Battle After Another is surprise frontrunner - so has the British Academy turned against Britain?

3 days ago 16

Leonardo DiCaprio's film One Battle After Another has topped the BAFTA longlist.

The most prestigious film ceremony in the UK, the BAFTAs are typically known for honouring British talent and projects that have perhaps been overlooked by international audiences.

However, this year, the film that has curried the most favour with the British Academy is the American black comedy - which recently scooped Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards

Currently, One Battle After Another has 16 nods across various categories, including Best Film, Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, Leading Actor for DiCaprio and Leading Actress for Chase Infiniti.

Tied in second place with 14 nods are American horror film Sinners and British historical drama Hamnet, while American sports comedy-drama Marty Supreme has 13.

However, these numbers will change after the next round of voting to determine the shortlist. The official nominations will be announced on January 27.

Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal star in Hamnet playing William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway

Only two Brits are named for Leading Actress - Cythia Erivo for Wicked and Andrea Riseborough for Dragonfly.

They will battle it out against the likes of Irish star Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) and American Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love).

It's a similar story for Leading Actor with just Harry Melling (Pillion) and Robert Aramayo (I Swear) flying the flag amongst the 10 stars which include Russell Crowe (Nuremberg), Timothee Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Cillian Murphy (Steve).

Four of the 10 movies longlisted for Best Film were set in the UK including Hamnet, The Ballad of Wallis Island, I Swear and Frankenstein.

The EE Rising Star Award is the only award voted for by the public.

The nominees for EE Rising Star will be revealed on January 14 and the winner will be announced at the ceremony.

BAFTA Film Committee Chair, Emily Stillman, said of the longlist: 'Today’s 82 longlisted films reflect a year of outstanding filmmaking told through bold, complex and original storytelling and exceptional craftsmanship.

'The presence of the British film industry across this global list is felt strongly – from our world class talent, locations and infrastructure to scripts rooted in a distinctly British perspective.

'In a stand-out year for film, our 8,300 BAFTA voting members face a formidable task ahead.

'We are delighted BAFTA’s Film Awards longlists have become such an important part of awards season, giving the spotlight to a vast range of films, and we hope the public will enjoy watching and discussing them as much as we have.'

One Battle After Another has won phenomenal praise and generated Oscar buzz among critics.

The DiCaprio-fronted film, an action-thriller based loosely on Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland, has been greeted with five-star reviews across the board and even deemed 'the defining film of a generation'.

One Battle After Another sees Leo playing Bob Ferguson, a dishevelled and distraught revolutionary who lives in a state of stoned paranoia off-grid with his daughter Willa, whom he shares with Teyana Taylor's character Perfidia.

The film follows Bob as he reconnects with a group of allies on a mission to track down his daughter, with Benicio Del Toro playing his sensei, guiding him through a life without fear.

The high-stakes thriller and black comedy also sees Sean Penn starring as Bob's evil nemesis, Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, and Regina Hall playing revolutionary Deandra.

Winning praise from the top, Steven Spielberg gushed: 'What an insane movie, oh my God. There is more action in the first hour of this than every other film you've ever directed put together. Everything, it is really incredible...

'This is such a concoction of things that are so bizarre and at the same time so relevant, that I think have become increasingly more relevant than perhaps even when you finished the screenplay and assembled your cast and crew and began production.'

The EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday 22 February 2026.
