Marvel Studios has officially released its third teaser for Avengers: Doomsday online, giving us our first look at some of the X-Men who will be starring in the upcoming MCU crossover. However, there are still some question marks regarding which universe these mutant heroes are from.
While the main MCU timeline takes place on Earth-616, we know that The Fantastic Four will be coming from Earth-828. However, things are a little less cut and dry when it comes to the X-Men, even though the confirmed members we'll be seeing in Avengers: Doomsday will be played by actors we've seen before in Fox's universe of films.
Are Avengers: Doomsday's X-Men From The Original Fox Universe? (Unlikely)
If anything, the X-Men franchise from 20th Century Fox can be defined by its impressive timeline confusion. However, we'll give you the bare-bones basics that make us confident the Fox universe designated Earth-10005 won't be the timeline Doomsday's X-Men call home.
Beginning with the original X-Men trilogy of the early 2000s, we know James Marsden's Cyclops was killed in 2006's The Last Stand. However, timeline changes in 2014's Days of Future Past prevented a major dystopia where deadly robotic Sentinels nearly wiped out all mutantkind, resulting in an altered reality where Scott was still alive (and Jean Grey).
Even so, we learned in 2017's Logan that the X-Men were all killed (aside from Wolverine) at the onset of Charles Xavier's brutal seizures, which made him lose control of his powers.
While it's technically possible Avengers: Doomsday could take place before the relative events of Logan, that also feels unlikely, as both take place around the same period (2028-2029 on their respective timelines). Tracking with me so far?
Throw in Deadpool's manipulations of the timeline seen in 2018's Deadpool 2 and 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, and things get even messier and confusing. Likewise, the reality belonging to the most recent version of Wolverine, which Deadpool brought to Earth-10005 to become its new anchor being, doesn't work either, as we know that the rest of the X-Men were also killed in that timeline.
Instead, there seems to be one (perhaps two) solid options when it comes to the actual universe these familiar X-Men are from before they join the Avengers and Fantastic Four against Doctor Doom later this year.
The MCU Has Already Teased This New X-Men Universe
As we saw in The Marvels' post-credits scene, Monica Rambeau was shown waking up in a new reality apart from Earth-616 after closing the cosmic rift seen at the end of 2023's final MCU movie.
Trapped on the wrong side of the rift, Monica specifically woke up in the Xavier Mansion and was being monitored by none other than the X-Men's Beast (Kelsey Grammer, who's also confirmed to be in Doomsday). Monica also encounters a variant of her own mother, Maria Rambeau (appearing to be the hero Binary in this reality).
Keeping all that in mind as well as Beast's new visual depiction being more comic-accurate compared to Fox's original X-Men movies, it does seem like this will indeed be the same universe the rest of Doomsday's X-Men will call home in the upcoming MCU crossover.
Not only does Cyclops' comic-accurate blue and yellow suit further support this idea, but the Sentinels in the background when he fires a massive optic blast also suggest this will indeed be a reality in the multiverse, apart from Earth-10005.
On the other hand, it's also possible that it will simply be a brand-new reality altogether, one we've never seen before, with Marvel Studios using past Fox actors for recognition and nostalgia. After all, The Marvels was not a very big success relative to other MCU projects released in the past few years, and it's not as if the MCU's Phases 4 and 5 have been lauded for their connectivity.
At any rate, it's going to be very exciting to see how these new X-Men will factor into Avengers: Doomsday (and if the Wolverine we met in 2024 will get to encounter/reunite with the faces of friends long gone).
Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in theaters on December 18th from Marvel Studios.
