Avatar: Fire and Ash is preparing to enter its fourth full weekend in theaters, and after recently reaching the $1 billion milestone, it has just passed one of Marvel’s most beloved movies from the Infinity Saga. At the time of writing, Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed $315 million domestically and $779 million internationally for a global cumulative total of just under $1.1 billion. This is enough to push it past both the domestic and worldwide totals of Thor: Ragnarok, the 2017 standout Thor film starring Chris Hemsworth. Ragnarok is widely hailed as the best of the four Thor movies in the MCU.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is one of the most profitable movies of 2025, but it’s helped the franchise accomplish something no other conglomerate has before. There are only three Avatar movies, but all of them have grossed over $1 billion at the global box office. The first two, Avatar (2009), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) even reached $2 billion before they left theaters, but it seems Fire and Ash will fall short of the $2 billion. Still, despite costing Disney and 20th Century around $400 million, Avatar: Fire and Ash is poised to be a major profit, potentially securing another movie.
It seemed a sure thing that another Avatar movie would be released in 2029, especially considering it’s already got a firm spot on the release calendar so far away. However, in the weeks before the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, director James Cameron said that the fourth film was no longer a certainty, and that it would depend heavily on how the film performs at the box office. Hopefully, clearing $1 billion is enough to foot the bill for Avatar 4.
When Is ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Coming to Disney+?
Disney has yet to make an announcement about any streaming information for Avatar: Fire and Ash, and considering the film is still earning millions by the day, it’ll likely be a while before it happens. If Avatar: The Way of Water is any indication, Fire and Ash will likely premiere on Disney+ sometime in June. However, with the film tracking to finish with less at the box office than its predecessor, this timeline could be moved forward. Before it begins streaming on Disney+, it will have a run on VOD platforms like Prime Video and Fandango at Home.
Stay tuned to Collider for more box office and potential streaming updates on Avatar: Fire and Ash.
