In the wake of the ICE shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Jan. 24, non-profit organizations and small businesses across the country are participating in a nationwide shutdown and general strike to show solidarity with the people of Minnesota and activism against ICE. In Los Angeles, many restaurants and shops are shutting down entirely, others are staying open to foster community and continue paying their employees, some while making donations to social justice organizations.
Vidiots in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Eagle Rock announced it would make all screenings free of charge on Friday. “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “UHF” are among films showing in the evening.
The American Cinematheque will offer free admission to “Something Wild” at the Aero in Santa Monica and “Horse Feathers” and “The Killing of a Chinese Bookie” at the Los Feliz 3. Free popcorn and soda will be included at the Aero.
Braindead Studios and the Museum of Neon Art are among other cultural shutdowns on Friday.
Among the organizations supporting the effort are IATSE Local 800 (Art Director’s Guild) and the WGA West, which will have a presence at the National Day of Action rally at L.A. City Hall at 1 p.m. Friday.
Restaurants closing down for the day include Joan’s on Third, Wilde’s, Bar Siesta, Canyon Coffee, Courage Bagels, Tomat, Bacetti Trattoria and Proof Bakery.
