EXCLUSIVE: Dark Matter and The Handmaid’s Tale actress Amanda Brugel and Dragon’s Den Canada investor Wes Hall are set to enter The Legacy Lounge, which is set to bow on CBC in Canada.
The pair will feature after being selected as new additions to Shamier Anderson and Stephan James‘ Black Academy. Also featured in the four-part CBC series, which brothers Anderson and James will front, are Nathaniel James, Kadeem Hemmings and Nicholas McDonald of the viral TikTok dance trio Basement Gang and multi-platinum recording artist Fefe Dobson.
The episodes are designed to celebrate the success of the Black Canadian honorees, whose work Anderson and Shamier say has “left a lasting mark on their field, culture and community.”
Brugel, an actress-producer, appeared in Apple TV’s Dark Matter and Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale and has had roles in shows such as The Driver.
Hall is the founder and CEO of Kingsdale Advisors, Exec Chairman and sounder of WeShall Investments, founder of the BlackNorth Initiative and a Dragon investor in CBC’s Dragon’s Den, the Canadian version of Shark Tank.
The series, which we first told you about in December, will launch on streamer CBC Gem tomorrow (January 30), with all four episodes available. It will also be offered through CBC’s YouTube channel throughout Black History Month, beginning Monday (February 2) and then have a linear run on CBC at 7.30 p.m. local time from Friday, February 27.
The series will also feature special guest appearances from Kevin “k-os” Brereton and Christian Thompson in the episode celebrating Dobson; Barb Godfrey and Weyni Mengesha, who herself received the Trailblazer Award from The Black Academy at the 2024 Legacy Awards, in Brugel’s episode; Walied Soliman and filmmaker Clement Virgo for Hall’s episode; and Adrian Holmes, host of the 2024 Legacy Awards, in the Basement Gang ep. Willow Smith and Ann Merriam will provide testimonials for Dobson, O-T Fagbenle will do the same for Brugel, along with Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor for Basement Gang.
Filmed at Toronto’s King & Bay Bespoke Solutions, The Legacy Lounge is co-created and executive produced by Anderson (John Wick) and Golden Globe nominee James (If Beale Street Could Talk). Jesse Murphy (Laugh It Forward) and Andrew Barnsley (Schitt’s Creek) are executive producers.
Tse Daniel and Shelby Bronstine oversee production as series producers on behalf of Anderson and James’ Bay Mills Studios, The Black Academy, and Project10 Productions, which makes CBC comedy series Son of a Critch.
For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports; Jennifer Dettman is Executive Director, Unscripted Content; and Nic Meloney is Executive in Charge of Production, Unscripted Content.
