‘Adolescence’ Star Owen Cooper Becomes Youngest Golden Globes Winner for Supporting Actor in TV Series

“Adolescence” star Owen Cooper took home his first Golden Globe on Sunday night, winning the trophy for male actor in a supporting role on television. This makes Cooper the youngest winner in the category ever — at age 16, he beats Chris Colfer, who was 20 when he won for “Glee” in 2010.

This also makes Cooper the second-youngest male Globe winner of all time. “The Champ” star Ricky Schroder, at age 9, won in 1980 for new star of the year.

“Standing here at the Golden Globes does not feel real whatsoever. What an incredible journey me and my family has been put through,” Cooper said in his speech, making the audience laugh. “We are forever grateful for what these people have done for me and my family.”

He went on to say that he was the only boy in his drama class, and while “it was embarrassing,” he “got through it.” He also said he’s “still learning every day,” especially from those actors in the room.

Cooper also won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie. That made him the youngest-ever male acting winner in Emmy history. He was nominated for playing Jamie Miller in the Netflix miniseries “Adolescence,” which was his breakout role.

The actor was nominated against Ashley Walters (“Adolescence”), Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), Jason Isaacs (“The White Lotus”), Tramell Tillman (“Severance”) and Walton Goggins (“The White Lotus”).

“Adolescence” has been an awards darling; at the Emmys, besides Cooper’s honor, the show took home best limited series, best actor (Stephen Graham) and best supporting actress (Erin Doherty). Cooper has also won the Critics’ Choice award, the Gotham TV award and is nominated for SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Award.

“Adolescence” received five Globes nominations this year. Besides Cooper and Walters, that included best performance by a male actor in a limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television (Stephen Graham), best performance by a female actor in a supporting role on television (Erin Doherty), and best television limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television.

The male actor in a supporting role on television category encompasses all genres — including comedy, drama and limited series fields. Last year’s winner was “Shogun” star Tadanobu Asano.
