HBO Max and A24 have reached a multi-year renewal of their pay-1 distribution deal, ensuring that subscribers will gain access to Marty Supreme and other notable titles.
In the streaming era, pay-1 deals have been key differentiators, especially during awards season. In addition to vertically integrated arrangements like Universal and Focus Features titles going to NBCUniversal’s Peacock, or Searchlight releases debuting on Hulu, third-party pay-1 arrangements carry weight. One of the most prominent was struck in 2021 between Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Along with seeing a lift from fresh Sony theatricals, the original production component of the agreement yielded Kpop Demon Hunters, the biggest Netflix movie release of all time.
Along with Marty Supreme, which is A24’s biggest-budgeted title but on a pace to become one of its biggest moneymakers, the pact includes The Drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson and The Moment starring Charli xcx.
In announcing the renewal, the companies said that in the prior pact, half of A24’s pay-1 titles ranked among HBO Max’s top 10 movies within their first two weeks on the service in 2025. Nearly 70% of HBO Max viewers who watched an A24 film came back to watch an average of four titles from the studio.
In all, dozens of A24 films will be available to HBO Max subscribers during the length of the pay-1 arrangement. Upcoming releases include The Backrooms, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass; The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer; Enemies, starring Jeremy Allen White and Austin Butler; How to Make a Killing, starring Glen Powell; Pillion, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling; and Primetime with Robert Pattinson.
“A24 has been an incredible partner, bringing a slate of talented creative voices and an engaged audience base to the platform,” said Royce Battleman, EVP of Global Content Acquisitions for HBO Max. “Their bold storytelling perfectly complements the distinct programming offered on HBO Max.”
Along with A24 titles, HBO Max features films from the likes of Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Turner Classic Movies and Studio Ghibli. A banner 2025 for Warners has brought major awards contenders like One Battle After Another, Sinners and Weapons to the service, along with blockbusters like Superman and Minecraft.
