Warner Bros. just released the blood-soaked red-band trailer for the upcoming action-horror comedy They Will Kill You, and it is shaping up to be a gore-filled rollercoaster ride of a movie. The film stars Zazie Beetz, who fans will instantly recognize as Domino from Deadpool 2, and plays like a Ready or Not-style thriller, but this time the bloodshed happens inside a New York City hotel instead of an isolated mansion. Beetz plays a housekeeper who lands a job at an ultra-exclusive hotel called the Virgil. At first, it looks like a dream gig, but she soon discovers that the hotel is actually the headquarters of a satanic cult. And worse, she has been selected as the next monthly sacrifice. The trailer wastes no time showing how brutal and unhinged this place really is. Wardrobes become death traps, hallways turn into war zones, and every room hides a new threat.
The cast around Beetz is also stacked with familiar faces. Myha’la, who previously starred in Bodies Bodies Bodies and Leave the World Behind, shows up and gets hilariously knocked out by Beetz in one of the trailer’s biggest laughs. Harry Potter icon Tom Felton also appears and slips right back into villain mode. He leads a search party through the hotel, and it does not end well for his team, who get brutally taken out by Beetz’s character. Patricia Arquette, best known as Harmony Cobel from Severance, plays the polished and intimidating hotel boss. She warmly welcomes Beetz at first, and later commands the entire building to hunt her down.
This film also marks the first project from Skydance’s new horror label Nocturna, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling the theatrical release. Adding even more hype is the involvement of Andy and Barbara Muschietti as producers. The duo previously delivered the IT films and the recent prequel series IT: Welcome to Derry, which just wrapped up a hugely successful first season. They have a proven track record in horror that balances scares and dark humor, and their presence has seriously raised expectations for They Will Kill You.
The Action Sequences in ‘They Will Kill You’ Feel Straight Out of ‘John Wick’
The trailer makes it clear that the action is going to be front and center in They Will Kill You. There is a heavy focus on tight gun-fu choreography and stylized violence that feels ripped straight out of the John Wick playbook. Long takes follow the characters as they fight and fall through hotel corridors and lavish rooms without cutting away.
A big reason the fight scenes look so sharp comes down to the talent behind the scenes. According to IMDb, the film’s fight coordinator is Russ McCarroll. He has previously worked on Mad Max: Fury Road and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Both films feature phenomenal, high-octane action sequences, and that experience clearly carries over here. It explains why the trailer’s action stands out and looks far better than the average horror thriller.
The film is directed by Kirill Sokolov, who previously helmed 2018’s Why Don’t You Just Die. That movie followed a boyfriend tasked with killing his girlfriend’s father, only to learn the man is nearly impossible to take down. With They Will Kill You, Sokolov appears to be taking that same energy and pushing it even further. At one point in the trailer, a frustrated character even asks Beetz, “Who are you?” because she simply refuses to die. The trailer teases flaming axes, people getting shot across rooms, and evil children getting punched in the face. It looks utterly unhinged in the best way possible and seems ready to leave a serious body count behind.
They Will Kill You is set to release in theaters on March 27. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
