‘9-1-1’ Showrunner On Oliver Stark & Ryan Guzman’s “Buddie” & Why It’s Different Than ‘Heated Rivalry’: “This Will Probably Piss Off People”

9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear is talking about “Buddie” and knows it will make some fans unhappy with what he has to say.

In a recent interview, Minear talked about the fan fiction surrounding Buck and Eddie, played by actors Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman, respectively.

Fans examine the dialogue between the two characters weekly, hoping to catch a hint that the romance between Buck and Eddie will finally become real, not just a fantasy on social media. With the popularity of Heated Rivalry, depicting two rival hockey players who have animosity on the ice rink but share a secret romance behind closed doors, many hope now would be a good time to make “Buddie” happen.

“It is a very difficult subject because I love the Buddie fans, and I am one of them,” Minear told The Washington Post. “It’s different than Heated Rivalry, where that is the show — the show is about those two guys getting together. That’s not what this show is.”

He continued, “This will probably piss off people, but whatever, this is what I think. I think the possibility of [Buddie] is what’s exciting.”

Last year, Stark talked to Deadline about the possibility of “Buddie” happening in a future storyline.

“What I will say is that if the story ever goes in that direction, I don’t think the way to do it is purely to give in to fans,” Stark said. “I hope, if it goes there, it’s done because that’s the right story to tell and that’s the right progression for the characters.”

Stark doesn’t “want to do it purely as fan service,” although he believed that fans “would feel served” if “Buddie” ever becomes a reality on the ABC drama.

“So I hope it’s not a case of giving in as much as that’s the natural progression for the story,” Stark added.
