Lionsgate has released the final trailer for Gerard Butler's new action sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, which will be released in theaters this Friday. In addition to returning Butler to his role as John Garrity, Sheriff Country star Morena Baccarin will also reprise her role as his wife, Allison Garrity. Early screenings for the film will begin this Thursday, and it will premiere in theaters around the world on Friday, January 9. The first Greenland grossed over $50 million at the box office, and the sequel will look to improve on this trend by starting the year strong for Lionsgate.
Lionsgate has even released an official synopsis for Greenland 2: Migration, which reads as follows: "In the aftermath of a comet strike that decimated most of the earth, GREENLAND 2: MIGRATION follows the Garrity family (Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roman Griffin Davis) as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home." After directing the first Greenland movie, Ric Roman Waugh returns to direct Butler’s disaster sequel. Joining Butler and Baccarin in the Greenland 2 cast are Roman Griffin Davis, Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Gausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie.
Ric Roman Waugh is going to be extremely busy during January — he’s one of the few directors to ever have two movies released in the same month. After Greenland 2: Migration hits theaters everywhere this weekend, he’ll have Mutiny in theaters three weeks later, on January 30. The action film stars Jason Statham, and it follows a man who springs back into action after rescuing a girl sets off an explosive chain of events.
What Else Does Gerard Butler Have in 2026?
Right now, Greenland 2: Migration is the only movie Gerard Butler has confirmed to release in 2026. His best chance at another movie premiering before the end of the year is In the Hand of Dante, a crime thriller that stars Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa. The film is ready to be released, but it does not yet have a distributor. Butler is also gearing up to begin filming the third Den of Thieves movie early this year, and he’ll work on reprising his role as Stoick in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2.
