A 16-year-old boy, Norman Prater, was last seen back in 1973 in Dallas, Texas. His family struggled through decades of not knowing if he was still alive, and his case remained open. Thanks to a detective, however, everything has changed, and the family finally has some answers, 52 years later.

According to a statement issued by the Dallas Police Department (DPD), Prater was reported missing back on January 14, 1974. While active, the missing persons case remained unresolved for more than half a century. Months after he was last seen, reportedly walking with friends in East Dallas, as per Fox 4, an "unidentified white male" was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Rockport (Aransas County), Texas, in July 1973.

Again, for decades, both Prater's whereabouts and the crash victim's identity remained a mystery.

Everything changed by the end of 2025. As reported by Fox 4, the Aransas County Medical Examiner's Office provided a photo of the victim to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Eventually, that photo arrived in the hands of Detective Ryan Dalby. With the help of a forensic analyst, Dalby believed that the "unidentified white male" and Norman Prater were the same person.

The last piece of the puzzle involved a crucial part of the case: Prater's family. Dalby managed to connect with Isaac Prater, Norman's brother, and showed him the picture of the victim's body. Immediately, Isaac recognized his long-lost brother, thanks to the distinct scarring he saw on the teen's face: a lip scar caused by a dog bite and an eyebrow scar he got from a fight.

Thanks to Dalby and Isaac, both the missing persons case and the hit-and-run victim's identity were solved. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux praised Detective Dalby's commitment to finding the truth and "providing closure to a grieving family." He also pointed out the DPD's dedication to solving cases like Prater's, "no matter how much time has passed." After all, Prater's case was the oldest missing persons case in Texas.

While the Prater family can now breathe a sigh of relief, many questions are left unanswered.

According to Detective Dalby, it is unclear what Prater was doing when he was fatally hit in Aransas County. Furthermore, no suspect has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run. Hopefully, now that Norman Prater has been correctly identified, Texas police will be able to solve the case and potentially find the one behind the wheel, if they are still alive.
