The main villain of a Super Mario game may have a secret presence in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The second full trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie offered a number of teases regarding the upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, including the long-awaited confirmation that Yoshi will be joining Mario and Luigi on their next adventure.
The reveal of Yoshi was obviously the highlight of the trailer, but far from the only significant takeaway. Apparently, the film will also feature an appearance from the pink female dinosaur known as Birdo, a regular in series such as Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, and more. Also on hand are two considerably more obscure characters, Clawgrip and Mouser.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Has Major Super Mario Bros. 2 Connections
In the trailer, Princess Peach is spotted fighting Birdo, with two more familiar faces present for the battle. Standing next to Peach while she's blocking Birdo's attacks is Mouser, a sunglasses-wearing mouse from classic Super Mario games. Behind them is a crab lying on its back. The crab appears to be Clawgrip, another past opponent of Mario's.
Birdo, Mouser, and Clawgrip are bound together by their roles in the 1988 NES game, Super Mario Bros. 2. Super Mario Bros. 2 saw Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach team up in a dream world called Subcon, where their primary opponent was a lizard-like king named Wart.
Wart led an army of various Super Mario monsters referred to as "The 8-Bits." The 8-Bits consisted of several existing Mario enemies, along with a few original characters, which notably included Birdo, Mouser, and Clawgrip.
Will Wart Appear In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
On its own, Birdo appearing in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may not tease much about the story, but the decision to feature three bosses from Super Mario Bros. 2 is a strong indicator that the story will have an important influence on the movie, and if that's true, that could extend to its villain.
If Princess Peach has entered an area based on Subcon or one of its locations in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it could be that Wart will be introduced as the one that's in charge. If that's the case, he could operate as a secondary antagonist to Princess Peach - and perhaps Mario and Luigi, if they're part of this particular narrative.
With the Super Mario franchise lacking prominent villains outside of Bowser and his family, putting Wart in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could make for a welcome change of pace, and allow the film to breathe some much-needed life into an underused villain.
