3 ‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ (2025)
The sixth and latest Final Destination film, Final Destination Bloodlines, was directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, and stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana as Stefani, a college student who sees disturbing visions of a disaster from 1969 that was averted by her grandmother, upsetting Death’s designs. In the present day, Stefani receives a warning from her grandmother that Death is coming for their family, targeting each of them in gruesome ways. Besides Juana, the film also stars Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and Tony Todd in supporting roles.
A reimagining of the hit horror franchise that changes up the formula by taking a family angle, Final Destination Bloodlines was a huge success at the time of its release in 2025, becoming the best-reviewed and highest-grossing movie in the series. Like its predecessors, the film leans heavily on its ingenious set pieces and choreography, but it also distinguishes itself through its greater emotional depth. It's easily one of the best horror films of the past year, and a sequel is currently in development.
2 ‘Les Misérables’ (2012)
A beloved 2010s period musical, Les Misérables was directed by Tom Hooper and is an adaptation of the stage musical, in turn an adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic 1862 novel. Set in early 19th-century France, the film explores the social and political tensions of its period through the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a former prisoner who is hunted for decades by the ruthless lawman Javert (Russell Crowe) after breaking parole. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and more in key roles.
While the film did face some criticism for Russell Crowe’s performance as Javert, Les Misérables was generally quite acclaimed at the time of its premiere and has grown into a fan favorite over the years. The film has been widely praised for its direction, music, and production values, not to mention the stellar performances by Jackman and Hathaway, with the latter winning an Academy Award for her role as Fantine. These days, the movie is almost universally acknowledged as one of the greatest musicals of the 21st century so far, if not of all time.
1 ‘American Gangster’ (2007)
A crime biopic loosely based on a true story, American Gangster was directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by Steven Zaillian, with Denzel Washington starring as the titular gangster, Frank Lucas. Set during the late 1960s, the film chronicles Lucas’s rise to the top of the drug business and the relentless investigation by Newark Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) that led to his downfall. Besides Washington and Crowe, the movie also stars Ruby Dee, Cuba Gooding Jr., Josh Brolin, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in supporting roles.
Easily one of the most iconic gangster biopics of all time, American Gangster was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in the genre. Anchored by Crowe and Washington’s powerhouse performances and intense chemistry, the movie isn’t particularly faithful to history, but it is a highly entertaining watch. The film has been widely praised for its direction, writing, performances, and gritty narrative, and it went on to earn several accolades, including nominations for three Oscars, five BAFTAs, and three Golden Globes.
