When it comes to Sci-Fi franchises, few have been as ambitious and open to experimentation as one that started all the way back in 2008, and ahead of its return, the movie franchise keeps getting better. Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, Alien, Avatar, and more make up the best Sci-Fi movie franchises of all time. However, there is something they share.

Most of those franchises keep a similar tone and storylines from movie to movie. In a year when the genre is bound to have several exciting releases, as 2026's Sci-Fi movies include original offerings and returning franchises, I decided to look back at one of the genre's unique offerings. This Sci-Fi franchise gets more creative as the years pass, and it will return.

Cloverfield Is A Unique Sci-Fi Movie Franchise

The Cloverfield franchise was created by J. J. Abrams (Star Wars) in 2008. The found footage monster film was directed by The Batman's Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard (Daredevil). It is safe to say that the talent behind the camera was truly excellent, and the movie itself was a non-stop thrill ride that made the most out of its format to deliver a fresh Sci-Fi experience.

Since the kaiju horror film, two additional Cloverfield movies have been released. However, none of them are traditional sequels. The Sci-Fi movie franchise has followed an anthology format thus far. Eight years after the original movie, 10 Cloverfield Lane was released in 2016. Instead of a monster movie, the project was a closed-quarters psychological thriller set in the same world.

John Krasinski's A Quiet Place franchise was almost folded into the Cloverfield universe.

Then, 2018 saw the surprise drop of The Cloverfield Paradox on Netflix. The Sci-Fi movie explained how the monster from the first film made its way to Earth with an Alien-like plot. The two follow-ups were originally conceived as standalone ideas adapted to fit the Cloverfield franchise, which helped keep the Sci-Fi franchise fresh and creative.

Cloverfield Is Ready To Return In A Major Way

Despite loving how the Cloverfield franchise has been able to expand beyond its original genre and format to tackle other corners of the universe, I'm happy that a true Cloverfield sequel is in development. Ever since the original Sci-Fi movie was released in 2008, I have wanted to explore the threat of the monsters for a full movie.

Speaking to Deadline on March 16, 2025, Babak Anvari, who will be the director of the Cloverfield sequel, teased the film's status, saying, "Just know that hopefully you're going to get something amazing." Based on how exciting the Sci-Fi franchise has been over the years, a direct sequel to Cloverfield is the project that can crown the whole enterprise.
